For this week’s discussion, we must describe achievement and use a real-life motivation example. Achievement motivation can be defined as the ability of the individual to work toward their highest performance level. In better terms, it drives you to accomplish goals or tasks. The individual is driven by success and thrives off feedback from that work. It is important to note that if a person is driven by achievement, they are likely to take on tasks that are not too hard nor too easy. I enjoyed reading through this week’s reading because it talks about motivation. Motivation is an exciting topic because, naturally, motivation is what drives us to accomplish our goals. Sometimes we think motivation is supposed to happen, but some of us lack motivation. Lacking motivation can come from a bunch of things, like doubting ourselves. It’s our instinct to doubt ourselves, and that’s perfectly fine. I will admit I used to lack motivation early on in my military career; I was going through the motions. I had no drive to get promoted at all. I would show up to work and do just enough and go home. Something in me changed after seeing my peers start to promote ahead of me; it motivated me to be a better soldier, and my work performance started to change drastically. I started winning awards, which drove me to get promoted to catch up with my peers and pass them. My achievement motivation kicked in, making me want to perform at the highest level possible. I started challenging myself with small goals and tasks that put me on a timeline to accomplish my long-term goals. I’m working on completing small goals and tasks to reach the next rank, Sergeant First Class. My military people know the grind it takes now to go from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. Anyway, I enjoyed this week’s topic discussion and looked forward to all your comments.

Achievement motivation is often described as a person’s drive to accomplish a task or goal. It’s the need for success that may be driven by different reasons. There are four theories of achievement motivation: need achievement, attribution, achievement goal, and competitive motivation. Need achievement theory is used to predict task preference and outcomes, Attribution theory is what characteristics an individual assigns to events that are determined to impact cognitive, behavior, and active responses. Achievement goal theory is broken into outcome goal orientation or task-oriented goals (competition or goal mastery), which was expanded to include social goal orientations, or judging competence by popularity. Competitive motivation is when a person’s desire is to feel worthy or competent, they are attracted to areas they will thrive, but are weary of their weaknesses. Physical activity provides a lot of room for achievement motivation, as it has many different scenarios and opportunity for competition.
I’ll use myself as an example. I am very externally motivated. When I join a competition, I’m either coming out on top, or I’m not satisfied. When I first joined powerlifting, I was very weary. My friend could deadlift 400+ pounds, and I didn’t even know what my starting point was anymore. I barely wanted to lift, and if I did, I hated people looking at me or talking to me. Once I learned I was actually on track with my weight class, my confidence soared, and I felt more driven. I know that when my meet day comes, if I don’t come out on top, I’m going to be miserable.
