Reviewing childrenâs books is a form of research called archival, content analysis. This is an important skill that developmental psychologists utilize. For this week’s assignment, we’ll complete a brief literary analysis and will write up the findings in 2-3 paragraphs for submission.
We might not all have a house full of kids’ books. That’s no problem; likely the easiest way to locate a book is to search for kids’ book read-aloud on Youtube. Here’s an example of one my son loved: David Goes to SchoolLinks to an external site. The age level for the book should be 12 years and younger (since we have not moved into adolescence yet). Any book is fine – feel free to use one of your old favorites, or find something new!
Here are some questions to guide your analysis. Please feel free to go off script a bit here⦠this is more of a guide.
*Briefly provide an overview of the book (e.g., title, main story/topic, characters, settings, etc). What age child is this book written for?
*Who is writing the book (the author), and what is their personal story (education, experience, background)?
*Whose story is being told? (Analyze the main characterâ¦. What is their gender/sex? Approximate age? Ethnic background?).
*What skills, morals, goals, values, etc. is the book expressing? What is the author hoping to âsayâ to children/teens?
*Examine the illustrations in the book. What emotions, values, etc. do the characters express? What do the illustrations add to the story?
*How will youth feel after finishing this book? Can you see it becoming one they read over and over again?
*How might this book stimulate childrenâs physical, cognitive, or socio-emotional development?
