The Personal Goal Statement is a description of the applicant’s purpose for completing the graduate degree, written in American Psychological Association (APA, 7th edition) format. The formal paper serves as the writing sample to be reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee to determine the applicant’s scholarly writing skills.
The paper should address: 1) why you chose to complete a graduate degree in your selected area of specialization at the University of South Alabama; 2) a current healthcare/practice issue or focus within the nursing specialty which you are passionate about; and 3) how your training/degree completion at the University of South Alabama will enable you to achieve your goals and impact the selected healthcare/practice issue or focus within your specialty. The APA-formatted paper of 500 to 750 words should demonstrate scholarliness and a strong command of the English language. A scholarly paper is defined as a paper that expresses progression of thought in a clear and concise manner while using correct grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.
1. I am choosing to complete my graduate degree because I have always aspired to have my Doctorate. I initially believed my calling was to become a nurse practictoner but the further I got in the course, the more I disliked it. I changed my nursing specialty to nurse executive.
2. The current practice issue I want to focus on is re education seasoned nurses. We grow accustom to the old ways of nursing instead of adopting new habits with the ever changing healthcare world. I want to be a voice to mend the gap between management and staff so that things will align in the best interest of the patient.
3. Completing my Doctorate will allow me to hold a high title to be able to implement changes that are not only in the best interest of the patient but consider staff as well. Alot of times staff members believe their voices aren’t heard when they are the direct care workers. They alot time know more than what they are given credit for. Working in the management field can start a trend to minimize the thought that management doesn’t care. The thought that they only give orders but never understand the outcome of orders. I want to be physically present with staff and allow their voices and ideas to be heard because without them, I would not have the opportunity to advance my career.
