Read the following scenario and then choose to work with the client with one of the 3 theories presented in this Module. You will write a 1000 word essay on the psychoanalytic theory you think will work best with this client, use key terms and vocabulary in describing your work with the client, identify the therapeutic relationship you will have with the client, utilize the therapeutic techniques and procedures used in that theory, and identify the basic goals for therapy. Use your imagination to address Nick’s progress and fill in details. Why would this work best over the other theories studied in this module.
Nick is a 21 year old student who has been kicked out of a major university where he was studying economics. He was also arrested for drug possession and paraphernalia found in his dorm room. Nick’s life has been in a downward spiral since his freshman year where he increased his use of alcohol and was introduced to Adderall which helped him stay alert and study all night for exams. He began using cocaine when a friend introduced him to it at a party. Nick was socially awkward and spent much of his time alone while in high school. He had found his new group of friends who liked to party and liked Nick’s access to financial means.
Nick was the first of three children in his family. His father was a successful banker and provided a good living for the family but he was aloof and seldom showed interest in Nick. His younger brothers were very athletic and their father was always preoccupied with their sports lives. Nick studied hard and aspired to become wealthy as an economist. Nick’s father was very strict and would frequently over discipline his children using excessive aggression which many times left bruises. He expected perfection from all his children but Nick felt that he had to be the example of excellence or he was nothing. Nick’s mother was a school teacher and very involved in her children’s lives. He would frequently go to his mother for support when his father corrected him.
Adlerian Theory is the one I would go with it!
