With two courses with weekly SOAP notes down our belt in addition to writing SOAP notes in our clinical areas, we have been exposed to this aspect of our future lives as nurse practitioners. All this practice has helped me ask the right kind of questions to my patient so that it will guide me as I compose my note. I have so far done two clinical rotations in family practice and luckily, I have enough patients to complete my cases and SOAP notes in the area of geriatrics. As I tally my SOAP notes, I still have to do a couple more under adult but since I will be doing my pediatric and womenâs health rotation on the next course, I aim to finish my SOAP notes in those areas first and then switch back to the last 2 adult SOAP notes by the last rotation when I go back to family practice and specialty.
For FNP594, I had a lot of memorable cases but I would not forget that patient whose HbA1C improved from 13.0 to 8.5 in a matter of 4 months and that other patient who quit smoking after 46 years because of Varenicline. Varenicline is a pill that smokers who desire to quit take twice a day. It does not contain nicotine, so it works differently than nicotine replacement medicines (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). When he told me he quit smoking, I was so happy and proud of him because he made a step towards the betterment of his own health. These instances make me realize the value of primary health in improving the overall health of a person, and eventually a population. If everyone would take part in their own health, there would be fewer hospitalizations and emergency room visits that are highly preventable. Aside from these, I would always remember my first Pap smear experience in the clinical area during this course. I was so nervous that I forgot to do a bimanual before the Pap, so if ever I will have another chance to perform a Pap smear, that is definitely one thing that I would do differently.
