This process requires researchers to collect, analyze and implement many research findings throughout all accessible data and new theoretical technologies that are always emerging.
Screening tests are often performed in many wellness checkups for many different populations by physicians. Iragorri & Spackman (2018) discuss the use of screening tests as being a very important part of preventive medicine; because they identify possible disease early in the development, many times where it is asymptomatic, this way allowing physicians to treat the condition early. This is a very useful tool when used right, as it can treat many conditions before they require hospitalization and become threatening to the patient’s wellbeing.
Sensitivity and specificity are two important roles in screening tests. Shreffler (2022) discuss that these two tools are very important to test how accurate and appropriate screening tests can be when utilizing them. Sensitivity happens when a test is positive for a given condition when the patient or test subject has the disease or condition, this results in a true positive outcome. Specificity occurs when the condition being tested gives a negative result and the patient or test subject does not have the condition, resulting in a true negative. These outcomes are usually inversely related, as sensitivity increases, specificity usually decreases, while the effect is inversed when specificity increases. This means a test with high specificity will have low sensitivity, and vice versa.
Tests that have high degree of sensitivity or specificity usually demonstrate a high degree of accuracy. Shreffler (2022) mention that the understanding of these data interpretations can help formulate highly accurate diagnostic and screening tools, this way aiding the decision-making progress, and improving patients’ outcomes.
