Key Resource:
Applying for a Grant: The General Approach
Instructions:
For this journal, you will consider the funding source for your public health program. Your grant application is an application to receive this funding. If the funding source likes your idea and your plan is solid, they give you money to carry out your plan, to build and run your public health program.
Step 1—Find a Possible Grant: Please browse various grant databases, like those listed on Applying for a Grant: The General Approach. Using these grant databases, identify one (1) grant that aligns well to your public health program (an exact match does not need to occur for this journal exercise; a “close” or “best” match will suffice).
Step 2—Analyze the Funding Source/Entity: Once you have identified the grant you will use for this journal exercise, learn the funder’s grantmaking philosophy, program interests, and criteria with the available information on the grant database website. Additionally, you are encouraged in reviewing available information (other than what’s found on the grant database website) on the funding source / entity. This may involve reviewing the entity’s website (not the grant database site), watching a recording of an interview from a leader from the funding organization, or reading news releases.
Prompt:
In 400–500 words, please respond to the following questions based upon the information you learned during this journal exercise.
Who is the funding source? (~125 words) Why could it matter where grant funds come from? Would there be any conflicts of interest in obtaining a grant from this particular source? If so, please explain.
What is the purpose of the grant? (~125 words) What is the general purpose of the grant being offered? For example, is it seed money (not ongoing operating expenses)? Does it only fund Direct Services? Does it account for undefinable (i.e., other) expenses?
Does the grant meet your needs? (~125 words) In what ways would the funder’s grant(s) meet your needs, financially and/or otherwise? If applicable, explain how the funder’s grant(s) may not meet your needs fully.
What are the requirements for this specific grant? (~125 words) Review the grant restrictions (e.g., geographic preferences, priority issues, type of organization that can apply). Do you meet all of these requirements? If not, what would you need to do before applying for the grant?
