This week, your disease should be related to the musculoskeletal systems.
Here’s what to do:
Students will select a disease or condition to research. No need to post to “stake your claim”, duplicated topics are okay.
Students will post the required disease/condition information by FRIDAY 11:59 pm (70%)
During the current or following week (30%), students are responsible for reading and responding to 1 of the diseases/conditions posted by another classmate.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PRIMARY POST:
These sections should each have a header. I highly recommend forming this in a word processing program and then copy/pasting into the forum – attachments will not be allowed.
Name the Condition or Disease
Break down the disease or condition name into its word parts. If it is named after someone, do not use this name but find the alternative name for the disease (there is almost always another name based on anatomy or physiology affected).
You cannot post on a disease/condition that someone else has already posted. First come, first serve!
do your best, an occasional duplication is fine…if you’re particularly interested in a topic make a quick post to “stake your claim”
Describe the Anatomy & Physiology Affected
Anatomy affected should include the proper anatomical names AND describe the normal function of the structure.
For example: tympanic membrane, not eardrum, trachea, NOT windpipe! Use your book or ask me about anatomical details
Describe the Symptoms & Method of Diagnosis
Provide at least 2 symptoms, giving the technical medical term for each and the breakdown of prefix(es), combining form(s), and suffix(es).
Provide one abbreviation or term for a technique, tool, or test used to determine the diagnosis and the full form (if an abbreviation) or breakdown (if a standard term).
Describe the Treatments for the disease or condition
Provide at least 1 technical medical term for a procedure or device used in the treatment of this condition and include the breakdown of the term.
You must reference your Source(s) at the end of the post using APA or MLA format.
DO NOT copy and paste information from your source. EVERYTHING you submit in this course should be your own original content. Rewrite the information, summarizing to fulfill the requirements listed above. I should not be able to find your information in the exact same format or word for word from a source (instructor reserves the right to use plagiarism detecting apps as evidence of mis-use of sources). Individuals who violate the rights of authors in this manner will be referred to the Tutoring and Learning Center for assistance and an AVISO report will be filed.
First offense – zero score on assignment – up to 80% can be earned back by rewriting the post
Second offense – zero score on assignment – up to 50% can be earned back by rewriting the post AND getting a “sign off” from the TLC
Third offense – zero score on assignment and referral to college for disciplinary action (which could result in withdrawl from the course or F grade for course)
REQUIREMENTS FOR REPLIES (Reply to at least 1 classmate, read any previous responses to the post so you do not submit duplicate information)
Each response must be a minimum 4 college-level sentences.
Greet the individual you are responding to by name (this is polite) we are having a conversation!
The sentence count does not include any conversational sentences, such as “Great job on your research.” Or “I found this disease to be very interesting.” Conversational sentences may be included, as it may help the flow of your response, but those are extra and not counted as the informative sentences required
Your response should include additional/new information you found on the disease/condition you are responding to
Each response should include AT LEAST ONE medical term broken down into the appropriate word parts. See previous example.
Ask the original author an anatomy & physiology related question that came up in your mind as you read their post
A properly formatted reference for the source(s) of your information.
Suggestions for possible responses to the example disease post from the previous page:
Give additional information on one of the treatments listed – what is actually occurring during the procedure? Then break down the term for the procedure into its word parts.
Give additional information on one of the symptoms – are headaches also common? Give the term “cephalgia” and break it down.
Give additional information on the anatomy – Are there other types of photoreceptors in the retina and if so, what is the function? Be sure to name additional structures by their proper anatomical names. Then break down the term into its word parts.
