This paper must be about observational research. The topic I chose and reviewed with my instructor is if music reduces stress in the work place.
This is the methods section I provided :
Methods:
Participants: I randomly selected 20 people from a work-place including 10 males and 10 females varying in age between 22 and 50. All 20 of these participants have the same job duties and experience a similar amount of stress throughout the day. The ethnicity of the participants include African American, Caucasian, and Asian. All of these participants live within a 20-mile radius of the workplace. I posted a notice by the timeclock asking if anyone would like to be part of a study to see how music effects stress in the work-place. 25 people responded, but I went with the first 20 to show interest to make group splitting even. The participants are all hearing and 10 of the 20 are self-proclaimed music enthusiasts that stated they would enjoy being able to listen to music at work. I was sure to split 5 of the enthusiasts into the control and 5 into the music listening group, the other 5 were randomly chosen for either of the two groups. The participants did not know which group they would be part of. They were only asked to go about their day exactly as they would normally.
Procedure: Measurements used here were behavioral measures. The two groups entered work as normal and went to their usual places. While participants worked regularly, myself and a colleague walked around and observed for signs of stress during a 1 hour period from 9am-10am. We also observed psychometrics 30 minutes after the reports were turned in. During this time, each of the participants have 3 reports to complete and turn into their boss. We observed for smiles, frowns, nail biting, leg bouncing, skin picking, tone of voice when spoken to, body language like looking stiff and on-edge. We finished observing and noted our findings. The following day, the employees walked into work as normal, but from 9am-10am, 10 participants were provided with a set of headphones and were allowed to listen to music from a playlist we curated. From 10am-10:30am, the headphones were removed. At this time, we observed for the same 1.5 hours, with the same duties, the same behaviors.
Design: Independent variables in this study involve age, job title, years employed. Dependent variables are stress level while listening to music or not being able to listen to music. The control variables are the workplace, and the time of day of experiment. The constructs would consist of the emotional state and attitude of each participant going into the experiment. Another variable could be medications taken or if someone has had more caffeine or an outside event that has upset them.
