The concept of health and wellness differs greatly between people. Health can be the absence of disease, while wellness can imply a positive state of health in holism, encompassing the mental, emotional, spiritual, and even social aspects. Think about your own state of health. Do you consider yourself a healthy person? If so, what motivates you to be healthy? If not, what would motivate you to become so?

I think I would consider myself a healthy person. I have always tried to have an active lifestyle. “The Constitution of the World Health Organization, which came into force on April 7, 1948, defined health “as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.” Today, three types of definition of health seem to be possible and are used. The first is that health is the absence of any disease or impairment. The second is that health is a state that allows the individual to adequately cope with all demands of daily life (implying also the absence of disease and impairment). The third definition states that health is a state of balance, an equilibrium that an individual has established within himself and between himself and his social and physical environment.” (NCBI, 2006). I have tried to incorporate regular physical activity into my daily regimen. This means trying to be active for atleast 30 minutes a day. Some days I go to the gym and workout there and some days I just go on a walk for 30 minutes to get some fresh air. Usually, I try to eat foods that are healthy and good for me as opposed to foods that are fattening and would make me feel bad. I try to eat a well balanced diet and a low-fat diet as much as I possibly can. I incorporate as many fruits and vegetables and whole grains into my diet as much as I can. I have always avoided smoking as it is not good for the lungs, heart, mouth, and skin. It causes aging also so avoiding it at all costs is beneficial. Avoiding alcohol is also a way that I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Although with nursing school it is very difficult, but I try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible as they can lead to problems with health and mental health.

I would consider myself to be an moderate healthy person. A moderately active lifestyle includes regular physical activity equivalent to walking about 1.5 to 3 miles per day at 3 to 4 miles per hour, in addition to the light physical activity associated with day-to-day life. Keeping healthy will also help you keep free of chronic diseases, like heart disease and cancer. Some more key advantages of eating healthily and working out regularly are that you will live longer, have more energy in daily aspects of your life and you will also be keeping medicine bills down. While the health of nurses is important to nurses themselves, it is also important for quality of care. A recent study of hospital employed nurses found that nurses who work with pain and/or depression report more medication errors and patient falls and a lower quality of care provided (Letvak, Ruhm & Gupta, 2012). The biggest motivator, in maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to be able to care for my client and loved ones as well. The American Nurses Association (ANA) (n.d.) defines a healthy nurse as one who “actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, personal and professional wellbeing. A healthy nurse lives life to the fullest capacity, across the wellness/illness continuum, as they become stronger role models, advocates, and educators, personally, for their families, their communities and work environments, and ultimately for their patients” (ANA, n.d., para 1). This definition implies that nurses must take an active role in assuring their own health – the physical and emotional demands of the profession are great and without proactive measures health will suffer, (Susan Letvak, 2014).
