Be sure the article is a research article; it needs to have results reported!
May be quantitative or qualitative
May be prospective or retrospective
The research may have been conducted WITHIN or OUTSIDE of the United States (*strong preference for WITHIN)
MAY be: (1) case controlled study; (2) cohort study; (3) an RCT (randomized control trial); (4) non-randomized control trial / quasi-experimental
May NOT be: (1) expert opinion article; (2) case report/case series; (3) QA/QI performance project; (4) systematic review; (5) meta analysis; (6) research proposal or clinical trial
MUST have results and be published within the previous 5 years
Download the article – be sure you have access to the ENTIRE article and not just the research abstract and summary/conclusion. This is ESSENTIAL!
On the top of the first page of what is the start of a comprehensive research project, include the group’s approved PICOT question and then…
Once you have met ALL of the criteria above, in the format of an annotated bibliography APA 7th edition format (two paragraphs), complete the following:
1. Discuss the relevance of your article to the significal clinical issue and PICOT. (one paragraph)
Once you begin reading the entire article:
You may find that the study population isn’t representative of the patient or problem you are treating or addressing. Research abstracts alone do not always make this apparent.
You may find that while a study population or problem matches is aligned with what you are researching, the study did not focus on an aspect of the problem you are interested in, e.g. You may find that a study looks at oral administration of an antibiotic before a surgical procedure, but doesn’t address the timing of the administration of the antibiotic.
The question of relevance is primary when assessing an article –if the article or report is not relevant, then the validity of the article will not matter.
2. Is the evidence in this study valid? Is internal and external validity found? How so or Why not? (one paragraph)
Validity is the extent to which the methods and conclusions of a study accurately reflect or represent the truth. Validity in a research article has two parts:
1.) Internal validity–i.e. do the results measure the truth in the population studied/what the researcher intended to measure? e.g. were bias and/or confounding factors present?
2.) External validity–i.e. are the study results generalizable? e.g. can the results be applied outside of the study setting and population(s)?
PICOT is
(P) Do nurses (I) who practice regular stress management strategies (C) compared to those not utilizing stress management strategies (O) result in staff retention (T) within six months
