The purpose of this assignment is for the student to explore the role of the nurse as a
leader and manager.
Process:
Students will interview a nurse leader of their choosing. Students will identify a nurse
that is involved in leadership at their place of employment or through professional
contacts, and conduct an interview. If a student is unable to locate a nurse leader to
interview, please ask your instructor for assistance. The nurse leader should at least have
a Bachelor’s Degree and currently be in a formal nursing leadership role. The student
will interview the nurse leader and investigate the following:
Criteria/Questions:
1. Identify the nurse leader, their current role and describe the type of leadership
they are participating in. you may choose to identify the nurse leader by initials
and refer to the organization in general terms, such as community or a hospital in
a suburb. You are not required to refer to the name of the nurse leader or the
organization.
2. Investigate and describe the nurses’ role as a nurse leader.
3. Investigate and describe the nurses’ role as a nurse manager.
4. Investigate and discuss how the nurse leader gained expertise as a nurse leader
(practice, school, reading articles, attending conferences, etc.).
5. Describe a current issue or challenge to the nurse leader, their response to the
issue, and if it was effective.
Part B: Writing the Paper
1. Introduction (one paragraph)
2. Characteristics of an Effective Nurse leader/Manager from nurse
leader Interview (Introduction paragraph + 3 paragraphs)
a. Interview a nurse leader using the Nurse Leader Interview Guide (See
Criteria/question section above)
b. Using concepts, you have learned this semester, please describe one
characteristic of your nurse leader. Please provide a specific example for
this characteristic (What does it look like when a leader portrays this
characteristic?).
c. Using concepts, you have learned this semester, please describe one
characteristic of your nurse manager. Please provide a specific example
for this characteristic (What does it look like when a manager portrays
this characteristic?).
d. Contrast how the two characteristics for a nurse leader and a nurse
manager are different.
e. Provide supportive rationale (citations) for each characteristic (cite
sources) on how it contributed to the nurse leaders’ effectiveness.
3. Leadership Theory (Introduction paragraph + 3 paragraphs)
a. Identify the leadership theory most congruent with your perception of
effective nurse leaders/managers (Transformational Leadership,
Quantum Leadership, Servant Leadership, and Emotional Intelligence).
b. Describe the conceptual basis (key concepts or principles) of the theory
(cite sources).
c. Describe its strengths, applicability in the current healthcare
environment, providing supportive rationale (cite sources).
d. Identify how using these principles of this theory would help you enact
change within the current healthcare environment. Please provide a
specific example of how you were able to (or potentially could) enact
change.
4. Self-Assessment (Introduction paragraph + 3 paragraphs)
a. Assess your ability to assume a leadership role using the AONL Executive
Nurse competencies or the MindTools surveys on leadership and
management skills.
b. Identify two professional strengths, based on your assessment, providing
a specific example of how using these strengths will improve quality
patient care. Support your rationale with citations.
c. Identify your level of nursing resilience using the Grit Score. How does
this impact your ability to function in a leadership role/ Please provide an
example.
d. It is acceptable to write in the “I” voice for this section only.
5. Using Theory and an Evidence Base (Introduction paragraph + 3
paragraphs)
a. Identify an issue from your Nurse Leader Interview currently facing nurse
leaders in today’s healthcare environment. Please describe the issue, and
the significance (impact) on safe, quality care.
b. Find at least two research articles from current literature (within the
past 5 years) regarding the identified issue. Wikipedia, Weeblys, and blogs
are not considered scholarly sources and should not be used. Please
describe the response to the issue from the studies and the impact of their
interventions.
c. Identify two ways a leader using your chosen leadership theory, could
respond (based on the evidence from the literature) to the identified issue
in a manner that promotes a healthy work environment and/or enhances
outcomes. Please provide supportive rationale (cite sources).
6. Summary: Conclude your paper with a summary regarding what you have
learned (one to two paragraphs).
7. References: APA format should be used in citing sources appropriately
throughout the paper to avoid plagiarism. All sources cited throughout the paper
should be included in the reference list.
Write a formal, narrative paper using APA format of no more than ten pages (not
including the title and reference pages). While there is no minimum number of pages, it
would be difficult to complete this assignment in less than six pages. The use of
supportive rationale (citations) is expected within this paper. This involves the use of
scholarly sources or academic sources (no older than 5 years). Please limit the use of
direct quotes to no more than two. You may supplement your viewpoints with examples,
but this does not replace the use of scholarly sources.
