In order to accomplish the requirements for the DNP project one must develop a plan of action and a time line for completion of the tasks involved in the project. Gray et al. (2017) describe the data collection portion of the research as the active phase, the collection of data, explaining that the process is circular rather than linear as the planning and pilot study findings may cause changes for any portion of data collection. Gray et al. (2017) also identify some factors that can influence data collection which include cost, availability of people to form a research team, choosing an instrument and the best way to disseminate the instrument to participants for maximum return. In addition, it is recommended that a pilot study be done to help reduce the risk of problems once the research is underway.
The focus of this particular project is the perception of caregiver needs when facing discharge from hospice services for extended prognosis. The information from this interview will then guide the researcher in the intervention, to make a more specific set of support items with easy accessibility through the hospice website. This has been identified as a gap in service especially with the increase in caregivers in middle age caring for loved ones with chronic diseases of extended prognosis such as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
The Zarit Burden Interview instrument has been identified at this point as the questionnaire. Sholten et. al. (2021) studied measurement tools for caregivers to assess the impact of caregiving, finding that the Zarit Burden Interview short form was reliable and suggest through their findings that clinicians may use the study to evaluate measurement selection.
Gratao et. al (2019) analyzed the internal consistency and validity of the Zarit Burden Interview-12 administered to older caregivers of dependent older adults living in the community. The results show that the measure has good internal consistency and can be considered valid for this population. Though this instrument is the chosen measure for this project it may not provide the same type of validity to the younger caregiver.
One major problem a researcher may find for this project is a number of middle aged people caregivers due to the size of the hospice census and population of those patients facing an extended prognosis discharge. The idea that other chronic diseases outside of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias may have to be added to increase the sample size to obtain sufficient data to evaluate the intervention.
The novice researcher, the DNP student, will likely need support resources that may be expensive. Such as measurement tool and statistician fees, survey copies, and personal time. Therefore, planning carefully using a budget of money and time can help achieve the best result with the least amount of stress.
