PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORTS
Identify then watch a sport movie that you believe demonstrates 3 concepts you have learned thus far in the course.
The sport movie can be any movie that you want to cover as long as you can answer the prompts below. It can be any sport movie which could be running, horse racing dance, football, cheerleading, golf, tennis etc. These are sport movies off the top of my head, but that does not mean these are prime examples that students have used before. Some popular sport movies in general (not necessarily used a lot) include like Invictus (soccer), Secretariat (horse racing), Seabiscuit (horse racing), Center Stage (dance), The Blind Side (football), We are Marshall (football), McFarland (running), Utopia (golf), Bagger Vance (golf), Bring It On (cheerleading).
This assignment is NOT intended to be a summary of the movie, but rather an attempt to identify some of the topics we have covered within this course, as they take place within the movie.
You are allowed to only use your textbook, notes and the movie as resources.
APA Format: No title page or reference page is needed. Typed in Microsoft Word using Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Margins set to 1 inch. The entire paper formatted as double-spaced.
Assignment length: Minimum 1 double-spaced page, Maximum 2 double-spaced pages.
Steps:
1. You should identify & describe at least three (3) concepts or topics which you have learned during this course that are demonstrated in the movie.
This needs to be in your own words, not quotes from the textbook.
This can be done in a few good sentences.
If you do not identify/name the concept your instructor will not know what you are discussing. Approach it that your instructor has never heard of the concept.
2. Describe the scene (three total) including what the actors are saying and doing. Be concise but pretend your instructor has never seen the movie or heard of it so be detailed enough on what needs to be understood about the scene.
This can be done in a few good sentences.
Explain how the concept (three total) is being demonstrated within the movie scene.
These concepts need to be evident in the examples you present. Think of it as though you are arguing to prove to me that the concept is demonstrated in the scene based on what you learned in the book.
This could be who used it, their goal, what worked and did not work, or some other way of demonstrating that the concept is in the scene.
Do not loosely tie a concept to an example if you expect full credit. If the concept is in the movie, but not the scene you explain you will not receive credit.
This can be done in one good sentence.
Follow this order: Identify & describe the first concept, explain the scene, then explain how the scene demonstrates the concept. Next do those three steps for concept two, and lastly the three steps for the third concept.
Overall Assignment Tips:
Have someone read your paper that has watched the movie. Then read your completed paper. They should be able to understand the concept in general based on your written description (if not you did not explain it well) and see its application in the scene from the movie.
Spelling errors should be kept at a bare minimum. (Hint: asking someone to proofread your paper will often help identify incorrect spelling not recognized by computers.)
Points will be deducted for grammatical errors (Hint: use spellcheck, have someone proofread, reduce run-on and fragment sentences. Read your paper aloud and ask yourself if it sounds like a well-developed informed paper.
After you write the paper reread the directions and rubric. Fix errors and ensure you are including the necessary components. Read it aloud to yourself to double-check it before submitting
