In the past, I used to have very bad test taking skills. When I study for a test, I would study for several hours and sometimes an entire day. Aside from that, I would change my answers on exams, and I would get very anxious. Now I consider myself to be a much better test taker because I utilize a strategy for every question that I answer even if it is obvious that I know the content. Although I use a particular strategy, I still believe there is room for improvement. My strategies include but are not limited to the following:
I try to spend at least a minute per question, this way I am keeping up at a good pace and will not lose time at the end of the exam. Some questions can be answered before 1 minute which will in turn provide a little wiggle room for the select all that apply questions which take a little more time. Another strategy is to take my time and read the stem of the question after looking at the answer choices. This helps me to figure out what the question is really asking me. Often times we get frantic if the question provides unnecessary information, but its best to pay attention to what the question is asking. My third strategy is to stop second guessing myself. I do believe that often times you should go with your first thought. You will find out that most times it is the correct answer. I always say “don’t change your answer unless you can tell yourself why”. The fourth strategy that I utilize is I eliminate the answer choices that I absolutely know is incorrect. Doing so will narrow down the options to about 2 choices which in turn helps with breaking it down. My final strategy is when approaching the select all that apply questions I make sure to read the question thoroughly and then read each answer choice while figuring out if it is true or false. The key to good test taking is to remain free of anxiety, pace yourself and be mindful of time. Don’t change your mind, and do your absolute best.

The areas related to test-taking that I need to improve my reading are comprehension and analysis of the questions. The first thing I need to do is comprehend because I cannot answer a question without understanding it. I could give myself plenty of time to study to feel more prepared and confident going into the test. As for pacing, I could time myself during practice tests to better understand how long I must complete each section. I could also take breaks during long tests/, so I stay calm. I can do my best on tests and reach my full potential by improving in these areas.
The strategies I could utilize to improve my test-taking skills and a minimum of five systems I have identified that will assist in my successful outcome include:
Time management: One area that needs improvement is my ability to pace myself while taking the test. I often find myself rushing through the questions and not reading and understanding them fully. Keeping time can lead to me making mistakes and not getting the correct answer. To improve my time management skills, I must learn to pace myself better and take the time to read and understand the questions.
Study habits: Another area that needs improvement is my study habits. I often find myself studying less than I should or not studying effectively. Keeping can lead to me needing to prepare for the test as I could be. To improve my study habits, I will need to learn to study more effectively and ensure I am looking in a way that will help me remember the information.
Reading comprehension: Another area that needs improvement is my reading and understanding of the questions. Often I find myself skimming over the questions and not taking the time to understand what they are asking. These can lead to me getting the wrong answer or needing help to answer the question. To improve my reading comprehension skills, I must learn to slow down and take the time to understand the question.
Critical thinking: Another area that needs improvement is my thinking critically about the questions and answers. Often I find myself just going with my gut feeling on a solution without thinking about it. These can lead to me getting the wrong answer. To improve my critical thinking skills, I will need to take the time to think about the question and the possible answers before selecting a solution.
Test anxiety: Another area that I feel needs improvement is my level of test anxiety. I often find myself getting very anxious when taking a test. These can lead to me making mistakes and being unable to focus on the questions. I must learn relaxation techniques and focus on the positive to reduce my test anxiety.
