This week’s discussion forum addresses the first two steps of the evidence-based process. According to Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2011), those steps are to develop a “spirit of inquiry” and to ask the “burning clinical question” (or an education, administrative, or public policy question) (p. 11). All of the readings and assignments in this course prepare you for a research proposal and/or research of practice proposal that culminates in the assignment due in week 8.
This week we will start with step 2 of EBP. What is your burning clinical question? You are to identify an advanced practice clinical topic that interests you. This will be the focus of your proposal for this term. Identifying a topic requires a great deal of thought and reflection so choose your topic wisely. Consult with your employer, classmates, work colleagues, and instructor for help with the identification of a problem. See the learning content folder in week 1 to view topics that other students from previous courses have chosen to get some ideas.
You will be choosing articles to read and critique on this topic throughout the course. Students are strongly urged to use articles to critique that are relevant to your topic of interest. These articles ultimately can be used for your final literature review which is part of the proposal.
Assignment Guidelines:
Complete Assignment Readings and Review the PP titled How to Write a Research Proposal
Pick your topic of interest for your EBP proposal
Post your topic in the Discussion board to include the findings after Conducting a KU Library search using search engines (CINAHL PLUS, and MEDLINE) and inform the class of the number of articles found using the KEYWORDS used in your search of your choosing, Select as many nursing articles after reviewing the abstract (current within 5 years) that are relevant to the topic you have chosen and create a Reference page for your final proposal (you may add or delete articles as you progress through the course but this assignment is an excellent learning opportunity).

Now that you have reviewed the nursing research article formulate your own research question or problem statement for the final evidence-based proposal paper using the PICOT format (posted below and found in Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt text)
Post your PICOT question or statement to the discussion forum
Respond to two or more of your peer’s posts on two separate days using the discussion grading rubric to guide your responses.
Please attach (do not copy the entire article into the forum) or add a link to the article that you have used with your discussion for your classmates and post it in the article review center which is located on the discussion board
