Hi everyone,
I edited the essay instructions to clarify the three subtopic questions. If you have already submitted your essay but would like to change it in light of this, please send me an email. The edits are as follows:
This assignment asks you to choose one peer-reviewed journal article regarding one issue of public concern and answer the following three questions.
1) Subtopic 1: In your chosen article, how does one scientific principle of psychology relate to the issue of public concern? Scientific principles of psychology include: rule out rival hypotheses, correlation isn’t causation, falsifiability, replicability, extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence, and Occam’s Razor (parsimony). For example, you may answer one of the following: does the article address a rival hypothesis, in what way does this issue allow for a study of correlation or causation, is there a prediction to be falsified, has there been sufficient replication yet, is there evidence to support extraordinary claims, or what assumptions does the article make?
2) Subtopic 2: In your chosen article, how has one tool of psychology been used to analyze the issue of public concern and help develop solutions? Tools of psychology include: observation, measurement, and experimentation. Briefly describe how one of the tools is represented in the methods used in the article in relation to your chosen issue of public concern.
3) Subtopic 3: As relates to your chosen article, what is one existing or potential impact of a discovery in the field of psychology regarding the issue of public concern? What did the authors find out from a psychological viewpoint and why does it matter? If they did not make a significant finding, what type of future discovery mightEs be important?
