Research Paper (150 points):
Papers must be developed using APA Style. Use of person-first language is required. For
example, when describing a person with terminal cancer, use the phrase âPerson with stage IV brain
cancer,â do NOT use a phrase such as âcancer victim.â Or say, âperson with type 1 diabetes,â NOT
âdiabetic patient.â In other words, focus on the person not the illness or disability.
Part I. For one week, keep a journal of your daily activities from the time you wake up to the time
you sleep. This can be informally written in a diary if you prefer. Make sure you plan and allow
time to keep a journal well before you need to write part 2 of the paper. To maintain your privacy,
you will not be required to turn in your journal to me as part of the paper. You will, however, need
to reference and discuss many aspects of the activities you logged, so do not include activities in
your paper that you do not wish to share with me. Example entry of daily log:
Monday
Wake up at 7:30, take shower, brush teeth, get dressed.
8:30am â grab breakfast and coffee at driveâthru before 9am class.
8:45 â find parking space and get to class by 9.
9-10:15 â take notes in class using paper/pen
10:30 â 11:45 â walk to class and take notes in class, call friends
12 â 12:45 â walk to union for lunch
1-2:15 âwalk to class, take notes for class, text friends while walking
3-4:15 â walk to class and take notes for class
4:30 â work out at gym
5:15 â go home (drive) and shower and get dressed for dinner
6 pmâ meet up with friends for dinner â cook dinner w/ friends
7:30-9:30 â read/study with study group at friendâs house
10- 12 â drive home, watch tv and sleep!
Complete this daily log for ONE FULL WEEK. The above is a guide only. Your daily activities may
be vastly different to this example!
Part II. Research a disability or chronic illness from the list below. The textbook may be one
source of research information for this assignment, but supplemental articles will be needed for
parts A and B. At least four articles from peer-reviewed journals are required. WebMD,
Wikipedia, MayoClinic.com, and other non-endorsed websites are NOT acceptable supplemental
materials. You may consult organizations such as the Center for Disease Control, National Institutes
of Health, or other verified sources. If you have a disability or chronic illness, you must choose a
different disability or illness from the one you have currently.
Write an 8-page double spaced paper using the following outline as a guide. Use headings for
each section of the paper. IMPORTANT NOTE: Papers must be turned in via Canvas. I will use
TURNITIN program to screen for plagiarism.
Grading is based on the following criteria and is approximate:
30% for part (a).
30% for part (b).
20% for thoughtful responses regarding part (c)
20% for writing style and formatting (APA citations and reference entries, grammar, spelling,
correct sentence syntax, clarity, and conciseness; page length, use of person-first language
throughout, use of appropriate headings. Please use headings to identify each section of the paper.
See below for headings/sections:
a) Disability Overview: First, describe the chronic illness or disability and include the
cause(s) of the illness or disability, how it is diagnosed, incidence rate and/or prevalence
rate, the typical prognosis and trajectory, the functional consequences of the illness or
disability, the psychosocial issues typically related to the disability, and the vocational
issues typically related to the disability. This section should clearly be a summary of research
findings pertaining to the disability. Correct citations are necessary â including any time
that you present information that is not common knowledge. This section will be
approximately 3-4 pages in length. Use your own words. I expect to read the description of
the disability that is mostly presented in your own words, but if you need to use quotes for a
sentence or two, then a citation including page number is required. See APA manual for
complete formatting rules and plagiarism guidelines.
b) Accommodations: Review your journal outlining your daily activities for a typical week.
Based on the information you provide in part (a) above, describe the activities in your
routine that will require accommodations and explain how you would implement these
accommodations into your routine. You must explain how you would accomplish all the
tasks from your list. Consider long-term plans as well. For instance, if you choose a disability
that impacts learning, explain the accommodations necessary to complete your coursework.
The activities that you retain in your routine must be realistic based on what you know about
this disability. For instance, a person with chronic seizure disorder may not be able to
continue driving. Think about how you would accommodate your routine if you could no
longer drive. Explain how and why some activities can be retained with accommodations
based on what you have learned about the disability you chose. This part of the paper will be
approx. 3-4 pages in length and should contain detailed information regarding specific
accommodations and changes in goals and routine. Correct citations are also necessary for
this section.

c) Personal Reflection: Provide a thoughtful reflection on what you learned about yourself
and the disability you researched in this assignment. Be specific about what you learned
from this assignment. What information about the disability in question did you find most
surprising? How do you feel about having to adjust certain aspects of your life due to a
disability or illness? What aspects of your life would be impacted the most? What do you
think is most misunderstood about this disability or condition? This part of the paper will be
approximately 1-2 pages in length.
