Your task will be to design and implement a behavior modification program for your own behavior. Choose a specific behavior you would like to change. The behavior can be in any domain including the physical, cognitive, social, or spiritual domains. As you choose a behavior to change, keep in mind that the time-frame for the project is only a few weeks. Then use course-related concepts to develop and implement a behavior modification program. The program and its results will be presented in a written report. Ideally, I would like to see one week of baseline data and a minimum of 2 weeks of intervention for this project. However, you may need a longer intervention period to carry out your project well.
Your written report will need to be typewritten and include the following sections:
Introduction:
This section will introduce the behavior you have chosen to change and why it is important. The introduction should also incorporate information from at least 10 scholarly studies. You do not have to describe the studies in great detail, but you should talk about how common the behavior is, what effect it tends to have on people, and what previous studies have found regarding the modification of the behavior. The introduction should be 2-3 double-spaced pages in length.
Background: Write a short autobiographical sketch of yourself and your history with the behavior of interest. This section should be written in the first person tense. You should describe the problem, why it is a problem for you, what you have done in the past to try to solve this problem, and what barriers or obstacles exist that keep you from successfully changing the behavior.
Goals: Describe exactly what changes you want to make in this behavior. Do you hope to see an increase in behavior, decrease in behavior, or for the behavior to stay the same? Be very specific about what you want to accomplish. Make sure your goals are specific and behavioral. Write your goals using the SMART framework. *My goal is to lose 30 pounds in 3 months
Motivation: How will making this change affect your life? What benefits do you anticipate if you are successful? Is your motivation extrinsic, intrinsic, or both? Do you have a support system to encourage you?
Specific Plan: Describe your assessment and intervention plan. How will you collect data on the behavior in order to evaluate whether or not it is changing? What specific behavior modification technique or techniques will you use? Please note that you MUST use one or more behavior modification strategies. It is not sufficient to say that you will try hard or apply additional will power to solve a problem. It is not necessary to use standardized and validated measures for this project. You may feel free to create your own rating scales or self-monitoring forms. Be creative. You can also consult the scientific literature to get behavior modification ideas (e.g., look at studies on reducing pimple popping for ideas on how to reduce your own pimple popping).
The data: Your program should consist of two phases. First, you will collect some baseline data for at least a week. What is the frequency or intensity of the behavior before you started your behavior modification program? The second phase should be the intervention phase. As you implement the plan, how did the behavior change over time? You should use tables and/or graphs to present detailed data on how your behavior changed from baseline to treatment. It is not sufficient to just attach diaries to your paper. You need to analyze and summarize the data in the diaries. The analyses need not be overly complex. In most cases, frequencies, percentages, or means displayed in tables or graphs will be sufficient.
*Make something up, but make it seem reasonable for a weight loss trend. Make the trend as I am losing weight, but I am not acheiving 30 pounds, however success is still being met.
Evaluation: Summarize what you did and what the results were. Were you satisfied? Overall, how well did the intervention work? Did you reach your goals? If you were to do it again, what would you do differently, if anything? Was it harder or easier than you thought it would be? What did you learn from this exercise? Do you think you will be able to maintain the behavior changes? Do you have any plan for how to maintain the changes?
* I want this to be mostly successful.
