As healthcare providers, we look more and more to technology to improve patient outcomes, streamline operations, and lower costs. Sometimes, technology can be used in ways that have ethical, moral, and legal considerations too. You will be writing about the use of personal devices and social media and their use in healthcare. We can do it, but dare we?

Scenario: You are an experienced floor nurse working on a medical-surgical unit and have recently been asked to mentor novice nurses who are going to be working on your unit. Your first nurse mentor assignment, Ms. P, has just graduated from a local college and has no prior experience working in the hospitals, other than clinicals. After a few shifts, you are beginning to feel confident that Ms. P. is beginning to understand her new role and allow her to assess patients and perform minor procedures at the bedside. Ms. P. goes into a patients room to perform a dressing change. You feel confident in Ms. P, as the two of you have performed this dressing change several times together. And…You were right, Ms. P. followed protocol and has a dry and intact dressing on the wound.
It is not until later that evening, at home, that Ms. P took a Facebook Live video of the wound and dressing change procedure. At this point, there have been over 300 views of the procedure on Facebook.
What do you do? How do you address this obvious breach of patient confidently and violates HIPAA?
