Bullying and its effects have become an important topic to explore, especially due to the adverse effects that researchers continue to attribute it. Outcomes such as suicide ideation, self-harm, and suicide, especially in adolescents, have always been reported at higher rates among those who have experienced bullying at least once. Statistically, it is reported that the chances/likelihood of experiencing suicidality can increase by up to nine times in victims of bullying as compared to those who have not been victims (Agarwal, 2019). As a result, it becomes extremely important that bullying and especially in relation to suicidality, be explored so that resources that can be used to prevent bullying as well as attend to those who have already become victims can be identified and actualized.
StopBullying.gov identifies several resources that can be utilized to realize the dream of preventing the vice and, at the same time, assist children who have experienced bullying. Laws, policies, and regulations could act as excellent resources in this course (StopBullying.gov, 2022). Setting specific laws, regulations, and/or policies that dictate how bullying should be handled, whether at the state or federal levels, could be critical in preventing bullying. The conceptualized laws or policies could bear clauses such as fines and/or jail terms for anyone who is found guilty of perpetrating the vice. At the same time, the laws/policies can outline specific procedures that will help investigate to catch those who perpetrate bullying so that the victims can feel that justice to them has been done when those who bullied them face the law. This way, bullying will be prevented through the outline of punishment measures, and the victims of bullying will be helped because the bullies will not be around anymore to continue bullying them.
The media could also be utilized as an effective resource in preventing bullying and helping those that have been bullied. The media can be termed to be responsible for the creation of awareness about social issues existing in a community, how the community perceives it, and the responses they give towards the issues (StopBullying.gov, 2022). In the case of bullying, the media ought to report on the issue without bias and/or fear or favor because it is not until a community realizes the truth of the matter that it will start to respond. Thus, the media can report on issues such as the number of children/adolescents who get bullying, the places where bullying happens most of the time, the people who are more likely to be victims, the behavior of those that have been bullied, and possibly the reasons that predispose an individual to become a victim of bullying. With this kind of information from the media, relevant parties, which include teachers, parents, and even members of the community, would be vigilant about bullying behavior, making it easier to identify a potential case and prevent it. At the same time, they would be watchful to identify those who have been bullied and respond to their emotional and mental needs appropriately. With such resources, bullying statistics will likely decline because effective prevention and management measures will be put in place.
