Project 1 – Using Psychology to Understand Problems
In these first two weeks of the course, we have been reviewing previously taught theories of psychology and investigating how we can use these theories to understand a human event or experience. Additionally, we are exploring how to use these theories and discoveries in ways that can change how people interact with and think about the world.
In order to demonstrate this, you are asked to do the following:
Select the scenarios below:
*You are asked as a consultant to work with a technology company to help them integrate engineers they have just acquired from a hostile takeover of a former competitor. The two companies have been fiercely competitive and secretive with one another’s ideas and products. Now these two groups of engineers need to work together to solve problems and create new products. What can you do to help them be more creative, cooperate together, and form themselves into a productive team?
When you respond to your chosen scenario you must use at least three psychological theories, concepts, or perspectives to build your answer. Your responses must be properly referenced, meet APA standards, and demonstrate a high level of critical thinking. Merely describing theories will not get you enough points. Think about how to synthesize these psychological concepts into a concisely written three- to four-page paper. This page count does not include the title page, abstract, or reference page. Do not go over four pages!
The main focus of the assignment is to demonstrate, based on what you have learned, that you can find research/psychologically-solid material that supports how you would help solve the selected problem. The article “Organizational Identification and Currencies of Exchange” is a good example of how social psychological theories can be applied to impact employee turnover and cognitive withdrawal.
