This assignment is the heart of your research for the semester. You are looking for solutions to
a major health issue, so you want to learn what efforts have been successful or unsuccessful,
thus far, in addressing your issue. Very simply you are summarizing the key findings across the
research. After reviewing a lot of research, you might narrow or adjust your topic. That’s okay!
Some tips:
o Identify themes—after reviewing a bunch of studies, what are the common
themes? Write about those. You want to identify a theme and then site at least
two studies to support the theme. It’s best to have three themes for this
assignment.
▪ DO NOT simply summarize each study in a paragraph. You want to
demonstrate your critical thinking skills–focus on interpreting and
analyzing the information by organizing into themes. For example, if I’m
looking at how to reduce maternal mortality in the United States, some
the key themes I would be writing about are 1) Physician
education/awareness implicit bias and its impacts on health outcomes, 2)
Increased access to early prenatal care, 3) Impacts of stress on maternal
mortality. I would discuss the research findings of 3-5 peer reviewed
studies related to each of these themes. If you need help with themes,
shoot me a text and I’ll do my best to help.
o In addition to reviewing the evidence of strategies that could address the issue,
you must also research professional organizations that address the issue. You
will highlight the work of at least one government and one non-governmental
organization who is working to address the issue and describe their efforts.
