The purpose of this assignment is to further your understanding of growth mindset in middle childhood development or the impact of social media and technology.
Instructions
Use the Academic Project Rubric to guide your project. You have the choice to produce a slide deck (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.) or to create a multi-page infographic or educational brochure on an application like Canva. Make sure that the file you upload to the assignment submission folder is either a PowerPoint or a PDF file. Other file types will not be graded due to being inaccessible with the assignment submission tool.
Your slide deck, brochure, or infographic may use bullet points and illustrations to organize and convey information. Slide decks should be approximately ten slides total, plus a slide for references.
Here is the format your document should follow:
Introduction
On your first slide (or first section of your brochure or infographic), describe the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset.
Middle Childhood
On your next slide or section, identify some of the foundational aspects of middle childhood using the course text and supplemental course readings. What are some key developmental tasks of middle childhood?
Then, choose Option A or Option B to complete the rest of your slides.
Option A: Personal Reflection on Growth and Fixed Mindset
Through decades of research, Dr. Carol Dweck, a Stanford University Psychologist, found that peoples’ beliefs about their intelligence differ.
Some believe their intelligence and abilities are unchanged. In other words, you have a certain amount of intelligence and you can’t do much to change it. This is called a “fixed mindset.” Think about the phrase, “I’m not a math person.” This statement indicates a fixed mindset about math because it attributes math ability to an unchangeable quality. There’s scientific evidence to suggest that neural connections grow and become stronger the more you struggle with learning and correcting your mistakes. Watch the following videos:

TED Talk: C. Dweck – The Power of Believing that You Can Improve
On your next slides, reflect upon these questions:
Self-efficacy is extremely important during this developmental stage of beginning and middle childhood.  How does developing a fixed vs. growth mindset affect self-efficacy in beginning and middle childhood? How does developing a fixed mindset in childhood impact development in beginning and middle childhood?
Apply what you know about fixed and growth mindset to a reflection and analysis of your personal experiences. Reflect upon some of these questions:
During your life, when have you had a fixed mindset about your intelligence or abilities? Use personal examples to explain or illustrate. During your life, when have you had a growth mindset about your intelligence or abilities? Use personal examples to explain or illustrate. How might the way a parent praises their child for “doing a good job” affect our overall ability to be successful? How did your family influence your mindset during this time of development?
Option B: Growing Up with Gadgets
For this option, watch the documentary, Growing Up with Gadgets, in its entirety. Then choose some of these questions to answer in your remaining slides:
How might technology, including social media, impact the social development of children?
What might this impact look like in some of the various theories we have studied so far?
What are the potential positive and negative developmental consequences of this type of technology for the various theories we have studied so far?
Discuss the implications of online bullying, including how this specific form of bullying impacts middle childhood development in ways not known to previous generations. What can we do as a society to prevent online bullying?
Conclusion (for both Options)
Based on your readings and your personal experience, share the following on your final slide: What did you like/dislike about the information in the video(s) that you watched? Do you feel like it offered some insight on concepts in middle childhood? Remember to provide personal and/or scholarly examples as evidence for your answers.
