The stories of the transgender children prove to show the rigidness and binary nature that society enforces onto gender. These structures often prioritize and enforce a narrow definition of gender based on biological sex, perpetuating the idea that there are only two distinct and opposite genders – male and female – with specific characteristics, behaviors, and roles. This traditional view of gender fails to recognize the complexity and diversity of human experiences, including those of individuals whose gender identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. They often fail to accommodate and recognize the diverse experiences of individuals, which can make it especially hard for children attempting to create and finding a path that supports their own beliefs. Children may experience gender dysphoria, a condition where an individual feels a sense of distress and discomfort with their assigned gender, and struggle to find acceptance and affirmation from their families, peers, and communities. This can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression, as well as increased risk of harassment, discrimination, and violence. As a society, we should never have rules that enclose the creative minds of children and make them feel helpless as a result.
The documentary really opened my eyes to the effects of society on their gender beliefs, and how conflicting it can be for them. Growing up is when you learn and develop yourself, socially and mentally. School is a great system in place to help do this, however, for these kids it is in turn the worst place. With no systems in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the child, kids take advantage of this and shame the transgender child for having different beliefs, which have shown to seriously impact their mental health.
