WRITING ASSIGNMENT/PAPER
In this paper, you will describe a character from a movie, TV show, or book from the
perspective of at least two theories discussed in this course, each from a different
approach (e.g., not Trait Theory: Five-Factor Model and Trait Theory: Allport). Your
chosen character must be pre-approved by instructor; notice no later than April 6th. You
can choose your theories from two of the following: 1) Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory, 2)
Roger’s Phenomenological Theory, 3) Trait Theory: Allport, Eysenck, or Cattell, and/or
4) Trait Theory: Five Factor Model. The paper should be no shorter than 3 full pages
(double-spaced) and no longer than 6 pages in length (not include references). In this
paper you should a) describe the character from a book, movie, or show (one-page
maximum), b) describe this person from at least two theories we’ve covered in this course
(from those listed above) (approximately 1-2 pages for each theory’s description), and c)
summarize and present your opinion about how well these theories describe the person in
question (approximately one page).
Divide your paper into the following sections and clearly label each of the following:
1. Make sure to use the specific theory rather than the approach in general. Describe
your character from these theories that are from different domains covered in the
course. Give specific examples from the character’s life that can be used to
describe the individual’s personality through the lens of the theory (60 points– 30
for each theory).
2. For each perspective, indicate the aspects of the character’s personality that
cannot be described through each theory. For example, are there aspects of the
character that the five-factor, Freud, Cattell, etc. are not able to account for? (20
points).
3. Include reasons for why your character may have developed their personality
(genetics, family, environment, etc.). Speculate based on the character’s situation,
family, genetics, upbringing, etc. (15 points).
4. In-text citations, reference page, length of paper (5 points).
