This document expands on the content within the module handbook outlining a structure for the assignment. This independent study is a novel piece of work allowing you the scope to think, research and write about an area of interest associated with your discipline; therefore, the rubric for the assignment covers the main structure of the assignment.
1) introduction; 2) literature search; 3) literature review; 4) proposed change; 5) conclusion.
These are only suggestions – being too prescriptive on content limits your ability to write creatively.
Introduction (500 words)
Set the scene and introduce the themed area- think about government policies, clinical guidelines; why this is an important theme in health and care.
Define/discuss using the literature any key terms.
Why you are interested in this area.

Literature Search (maximum 200 words)
This is where the formative assignment comes in handy. You will have generated keywords, explored a range of databases and i dentified suitable literature for inclusion in your literature review.
You can include tables or your Prisma diagram from the formative here – or add as an appendix.
In this section you are providing a summary of the process you followed
Please note below in the example-10 is NOT the magic number – depending on what you find in your search will depend on the number of papers you appraise.
A literature search was undertaken using the keywords “digital” “acceptance” “technology” and “Nurs*”. These were applied to NCBI Pub Med, CINAHL, and Science Direct data bases. Using the Boolean operator ‘and’ the keywords were combined and additional filters of year of publication, full text only and English language were applied. 200 papers were identified as relevant, and these were further narrowed by methodology and country of origin (the UK). This narrowed the return to 12. Table XX outlines the search process and Table XX details the papers found.
Ten quantitative papers were identified: 2 RCTs, 8 survey designs; One qualitative study; One mixed method study. These will be discussed under thematic headings in the next section of the assignment.
Literature Review (1,500 words)
Depending on the literature search this will depend on the number of papers appraised.
You can use an appraisal tool to help you here, but it is not necessary.
Theme or topic area 1 from the papers found in the search.
Theme or topic area 2 from the papers found in the search.
Theme or topic area 3 from the papers found in the search.
Depending on your topic and papers found you may have more headings here!
Proposing a change based on the literature review (1,500) A change to practice OR a research study
The ideas for this section of the assignment will emerge from your literature review and wider reading. For example, if your conclusions and recommendations in the papers say more research is needed then you are proposing to do some kind of research.
Outline the idea you propose to make?
Is it research or QI (if QI look at a project charter as a guide) Design or approach – e.g. PDSA or survey design or focus group Sample – who will be involved and in what context.
Who needs to be involved in setting this up in the NHS – think about leadership, teamwork etc
Outline the benefits of the proposed change
Try and include benefits to service users/professionals/your discipline!
Example
A clear and consistent message from the literature review is that more research is needed to understand the nurse’s preparation and support to use digital technologies in a variety of contexts (Ref, Ref, Ref). The literature identified is predominantly quantitative in nature therefore this study proposes to capture the views of nurses qualitatively.
Qualitive research is understood as ….
Using a simple descriptive qualitative approach nurses will be invited to attend an interview about their preparation and support to use digital technology. This approach is often used when…. The nurses will be from….
Conclusions (300 words)
Summarise the key message for the reader, return to the theme and your area of interest. What is the take home message from the literature review?

Area of interest: digital health – are nurses’ prepared to use digital technologies in their day to day practice?
The Scottish Government’s (2018, 2022) vision for Digital Health is clearly articulated in government policy in terms of using information intelligently to improve patient safety and quality of care; and to support people to manage their own health. Covid -19 led to the rapid deployment of digital innovations and all areas of health and care embraced these changes (WHO, 2022). As services move back to routine business there is an opportunity to continue to use digital technologies and evaluate outdated costly practice that no longer adds value to staff and service users (NHS Digital, 2018).
Digital health is ….
Multiple authors acknowledge the benefits and challenges of using digital health…. these include …
The continued use of digital health and technologies has prompted an exploration into how prepared nurses are to continue to use these systems and processes.
