The butterfly abnormality pattern, also known as the bat wing abnormality pattern,
describes a symmetrical distribution of shadows on both the upper and lower extremities. This is
often reported from a frontal chest radiograph; however, a chest CT scan may also be involved
(“Recognizing a PTX-2012,” n.d.). The purpose of this study, then, is to examine chest
radiographs.
The film taught me that several factors contribute to quality X—rays, including
penetration, inspiration, rotation, and angulation. The practitioner may see the spine through the
heart on a high-quality chest X-ray. In contrast, 8 or 9 posterior ribs are seen on an excellent
chest x-ray during inhalation (“Recognizing adequate-2012,” n.d.). The spinous process between
the clavicles may rotate on a high-quality chest x-ray. However, angulation is a different
component in determining an x-ray, where a nurse practitioner may spot the clavicle above the
third rib (or clavicle) on a chest x-ray (“Learning Radiology: Recognizing the basics:

picked up from the movie is that an apical lordotic view is a term for an x-ray film taken at an
angle toward the head (often because the patient is semi-recumbent). It is important to
remember that the clavicles and other anterior bones will be projected higher on the film than
the backbone and other posterior bones. Another key takeaway was the difference between the
AP and the PA chest x-ray. An upright anteroposterior chest view is an option for patients who
are too sick to get out of bed for a PA view. The lungs, mediastinum, and major vessels may all
be seen in an AP view of the chest.
