I believe a combination of biological influences and socialization are what lead to the differences in how boys versus girls play. Biological influences help to determine what kind of person one might be based on their hormones for example. The testosterone hormone in males is what leads to greater spatial ability and aggression. This can explain why boys are more competitive and dictate their games more when playing compared the girls. The estrogen hormone in females is what leads to greater verbal fluency. Thus, this is a reason for why girls tend to be more social and talkative when playing. Therefore, biological influences certainly contribute to the differences seen in how boys versus girls play. I also believe that our environment plays a crucial role in the way we develop as people. The socialization of each gender begins before they’re even born. It’s normal for parents to throw a gender reveal party so that they know the sex of their child. This is what lays the groundwork for how that child will be treated during their life. It starts off as being what decides whether people will buy them pink or blue clothes. However, as that child ages they will be treated a specific way based on their gender due to society. Even as small children I heard little boys being told how handsome they are and that they’re going to break all the girls’ hearts. From my personal experience, girls are constantly lectured on how to become a good woman that a man will hopefully want to marry one day. These two examples display how each gender is socialized and how they learn how they should behave and what is generally expected of them. In sum, it’s both the socialization of children and biological influences that play a role in why boys and girls behave differently when playing.
