A 57 yo AAM patient presents to the clinic because he has been feeling woozy lately. His only medical problem is HTN, he is controlled with a BP today of 104/62. He takes amlodipine 10mg, spironolactone 25mg, and lisinopril 40mg. After his labs come back, his potassium is at 5.2. You ask the doctor why he’s on so many meds since he is so well-controlled. He says, “well he’s really only on lisinopril and amlodipine for blood pressure. I added the Aldactone to get his amlodipine-induced edema under control.” You suddenly realize you’re not sure if there is a good way to treat calcium channel blocker-induced edema. Based on the evidence out there, what would you recommend for this patient? A 57 yo AAM patient presents to the clinic because he has been feeling woozy lately. *DRUG INFORMATION REQUEST RESPONSE INSTRUCTION
All drug information responses will be assessed according to 3 elements for a total of 15 points per response. First, the response should contain data that supports any statements made in the document (5 points). Second, you must make a recommendation based upon the data presented (7 points). For example, if you are answering a drug information question about a drug interaction, explain how you think the pharmacist should handle this drug interaction, based upon the evidence you presented. Finally, you must cite all evidence presented in the drug information response, using some sort of standardized referencing format (JAPhA format is always a good one) for the remaining 3 points.
While some drug information questions may be able to be answered, in part, by using some sort of table, or graphic; all drug information questions should contain a recommendation written in prose. Attached you will find a copy of a student Drug Information Response that was submitted to and published by the Ohio Pharmacist Association. While writing styles vary, and different drug information questions require varying degrees of detail and information, the attached example is a good guideline for how healthcare professionals should be able to gather, and process data in order to make recommendations.
