Understanding how to deal with the press during times of high risk is a valuable skill for everyone. You may believe that you will never be called upon to meet with the press and explain what is happening. However, it is possible that your supervisor may ask you to be ready to answer questions as a backup person during a press conference or interview with the media. If you are the supervisor, there is a real possibility you will be interviewed by the press. This exercise is intended to help you better understand some of the myths, principles, and pitfalls with dealing with the media and provide an understanding of your own personal skill sets and areas you need to work on prior to interviewing with the media. You will also review a press interview and rate the person being interviewed on how well they have followed the risk communication rules introduced here.
Step 1. Start by reviewing the following sections of Communicating in a Crisis: Risk Communication Guidelines for Public Officials.
V. MYTHS, PRINCIPLES, AND PITFALLS
1. Risk Communication Myths and Truths
2. Earning Trust and Building Credibility
3. Building Support
4. Avoiding Pitfalls
5. Managing Hostile Situations
VI. UNDERSTANDING AND WORKING WITH THE MEDIA
1. The Media Perspective – Facts
2. Space and Time
3. Working With Reporters and Avoiding Problems
4. Using the Interview to its Fullest Advantage
5. Rules of the Road
6. Planning and Preparation
7. Before, During, and After an Interview: Do’s and Don’ts
VII. CORRECTING ERRORS AND RUMOR CONTROL
VIII. ASSESSING PERSONAL STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
Step 2. Considering what was presented in the reading materials and lecture on risk communication, answer the following questions in your own words in a Microsoft Word document.
Under what circumstances might you anticipate that you would have problems with the news media?
How would you prepare for a media interview knowing your own personal strengths and weaknesses?
Step 3. Watch the accompanying video news clip and indicate how well you believe the person making the presentation followed the “rules” for what to do during an interview on pp 47-49 in the Risk Communication reading.
