Disability Autism Spectrum Disorder / Moderate Active Boy 7yo
Purpose & Overview
The purpose of the disability experience and paper is to demonstrate and deepen your personal understanding of the effects of disability on individuals and their families. As a basis for the paper, students must experience 24 hours as a person with a disability. After the experience, the student will write a paper, reflecting on disabilities and their impact on individuals, their families, and society in general.
24-Hour Disability Experience:
Students must spend a minimum of 24 consecutive hours as a person with a disability.
A portion of this 24 hours must be spent with other people, including going out into public (e.g., going to the mall or grocery store) where people are aware in some way that you have a “disability”.
Types of disabling experiences to consider may include:
use of a walking aid (cane, crutches, walker) or a wheelchair for mobility
a blind individual
being unable to communicate in either verbal or written formats
having complete loss of the use of your dominant upper extremity
Other ideas require instructor approval.
Students are responsible for obtaining and returning any equipment used for this assignment. Students must know how to use equipment and ensure that it fits properly before use. Proper fit particularly applies to walking aids.
Costs related to this experience are the responsibility of the student.
This experience forms the basis for the Disability Experience Paper.
Disability Experience Paper:
This paper will have three (3) sections, dealing with the following topics and answering the following questions:
PART I: Describe your personal, 24-hour experience with a disability in a narrative/story format. As you tell your story, discuss the following:
What was your chosen disability? Why did you choose it?
What were some detailed events of your day?
How was your performance and participation in activities limited?
What effect did the disability have on your communication and relationships with others?
How were your self-esteem and self-concept impacted? Explain.
What kind of adaptations did you and/or others (family, friends, society) need to make so that you could carry out or participate in activities?
PART II: Based on research, describe others’ experiences with living with disabilities in today’s society. Specifically, what are society’s attitudes towards people with disabilities? This should include both positive and negative interactions and attitudes.
You are expected to do research. Find at least two (2) accounts (e.g, biographies, stories) of people with disabilities – look in journals, internet sources, books, movies and other media. What do these people have to say about their experiences with society’s attitudes towards people with disabilities?
In reflecting on societyâs attitudes towards people with disabilities, think about what you observed and learned through your own personal experiences, such as community experiences, job shadowing and other personal experiences.
PART III: Reflect on the things you have learned through your own personal experiences and through your research (Parts I & II).
What difference will this knowledge make to you as a future Therapist Assistant?
How does/will this information impact your attitudes and actions (professionally and personally) towards your clients and their families?
