Instructions: For each of the case studies below, analyze the situation and then explain how you would respond. Then, for each of the scenarios, find support in your HIM textbooks for your plan of action and describe how your response is supported by management and leadership principles. CASE 1: Your department always has issues with phone coverage when someone calls in sick or is on vacation. Physicians, nurses and administration have all complained that there are times that they call HIM and nobody answers. The current policy says that whoever is available covers the phone. What are your options? What would you recommend and why?

All of the other coders were there in the department and you know they heard the whole thing. Over the next couple of hours you notice everyone seems to be uncomfortable and quiet. What would you do about this situation?

The hospital has been on a hiring freeze for over a year and today all of the Directors were told that tomorrow there would be lay-offs of 23 people. 2 of your staff will be affected. You know that morale in the department is already an issue. Everyone is nervous about losing their job and everyone is overwhelmed because they are often doing the job of two people. What will you do to ease the frustration, sadness, and worry that is surely going to follow the layoffs?
