DISSCUSSION POST
The capstone topic of my choice is beneficial to the elderly who encounter substantial financial burdens in treating bed sores. Bedsores are a vital disease causing up to 6 times the mortality rates as other diseases and are responsible for 60000 annual deaths (Borojeny et al., 2020). Bedsores cause over 2 million hospitalizations in the United States. (Borojeny et al., 2020). Bedsores are associated with intense pain, increased dependence on the patient, increased infection risk, and long periods of hospitalization, which impose more costs on the patient, relatives, and the community.
This ailment physical-social relations of the patients and impairs their self-care levels hence a burden that slows down family or community progress. Common treatment strategies for this disease include repositioning elders, using soft padding to reduce pressure, and providing suitable nutrition to accelerate wound healing (John Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). Therefore, developing more effective and affordable treatment strategies is urgently needed.
The motivation for selecting this topic is the associated benefits to the community when skin-protective substances and methods are used against bedsores. For example, Chen et al. (2021) noted that implementing skin-protective substances such as zinc oxide and silicone dressing reduced bedsore risks by 60%. This reduction rate is significant and will translate into reduced annual deaths and hospitalization rates, thus reducing financial burdens in the elderly community. Also, no standard treatments exist for incontinence-associated dermatitis and related conditions (Chen et al., 2021). Therefore, this intervention will effectively address an underestimated problem in clinical nursing and reduce the substantial costs of treating bedsores.
