The aim of this assignment is to undertake an in-depth analysis of a health issue from a structural/social determinants, or ‘causes of the causes’ perspective. The assignment will test your analytical skills, namely, the ability to apply critical theoretical frameworks to specific issues.
You will select a broad topic from the list below (or propose your own); develop a proposal providing a rationale for the focus on this topic; undertake research to identify the core causes of this issue; and develop a concept map. Instructions on how to draw a concept map to follow. You will also undertake a peer review of a colleague’s map.
The idea of the ‘core causes’ relates back to the topics covered in the social determinants of health or the ’causes of the causes’ (Session 3-6) – what you are essentially doing is collating causative factors as SDH (gender, race, class, etc) and explaining how they have impacted this health outcome.
Topics
You may choose a topic around one of the following issues:
• Obesity (in select populations, e.g., youth);
• Mental Health Issues;
• substance abuse (among youth, for example);
• alcohol consumption;
• oral health;
• vaccine uptake;
• violence against women,
• truancy among students.
So, for example, if you have selected bowel cancer as your health issue, and one of the factors you identify (through your literature search) is the levels of nitrates in drinking water, you might want to examine the links to dairy farming (for example), or reduction in screening. Can these two ‘variables’ be connected to neoliberalism – which is a concept we have studied – and if so, how?
Take another example – suppose you are looking at Vit. D deficiency in the Asian population. While there are physiological bases for this, to what extent do cultural factors have an impact in terms of food, clothes, etc.? if this is a problem for Asian women, is there a gender component to it – eg., cultural practices that prohibit them from spending too much time outside the house or which valorises being light-skinned).

Components of the assignment
The assignment will be broken into the following components:
1. Topic Proposal consisting of a title, identified problem in the topic area, rationale, relevance to health promotion, and bibliography. See Template.
2. Concept Map – draft (no marks) Create a concept map (comprising 3-4 diagrams). The concept map will identify key factors impacting the health issue you identified, collate them into groups, and analyse/explain the relationships among them. Include up to one-page of explanations of the diagrams. See Resources for Assessments for references and tutorial on how to make concept maps.
3. Peer Review (10%) You will peer review your colleagues document map in one page outlining the merits and limitations of their arguments.
4. Concept Map – Final (25%). The final concept map brings all the earlier components together into a fulsome report that identifies key factors impacting on a health issue, collates them into a concept map, and analyses/demonstrates/explain the ways the relationship among the factors identified there drawing on the theoretical material we have covered in class. The difference between the draft and the Final is the elaboration in the discussion that brings together the various concept map strands.
Please write Proposal only at the moment and I have enclosed template for it.
Thank you
