There are two parts to this assignment that you need to submit, an Excel file and a Word document. The CHF data for this assignment is in the module. The CHF dataset comes from the MedPAR dataset. MedPAR is a file that is distributed by CMS (the entity that administers the Medicare program). The file contains all inpatient Medicare admissions. Create a Data Dictionary by finding the definitions for coded variables in the MedPar CHF file (PDF) provided in the module.
All definitions must be completed in the Excel CHF file, data dictionary tab. So, one Excel file is to be uploaded. You will have to create the DRG definition based on research, it should be similar in format to the definitions provided in the Med Par file.
Everything with a * needs to be filled out.
If the cell is labeled “Description”, you will add a data definition that you have researched.
If the cell has an * you will use the MedPar CHF (PDF) file.
For example, find the data element “age” on the MedPar file and identify what an age value of “1” represents.

Rename the file as YourName_CHF data prior to uploading (10 points will be deducted if this is not properly named).
This part of the assignment must be completed in the Excel file and uploaded properly! It is worth 30 points.
The Word document will include the following:
In 2-3 sentences, describe the importance of a data dictionary for a research project involving patients with a diagnosis such as CHF (up to 10 points for three complete and detailed sentences about use of data dictionaries in this type of study). Select three patients with the SAME LENGTH OF STAY (LOS) from the database and describe them based on your dictionary definitions.
Provide the following information: ID#, age and gender (based on definition from MedPar you used in data dictionary), in addition to total charges (column H) minus amount reimbursed (column E) = what is the difference and why might these three patients with same diagnosis (CHF) and the same LOS have these differences? Provide one sentence per patient for this comparison. You could look to other columns for information or do some research, and be sure to provide your source (book, website, etc). Each patient must be described as to the definitions used in the data dictionary. Up to 10 points per patient based on details and descriptions. It is worth 40 points total.
