Using your knowledge of professional ethics (Week 7), identify the ethical issues posed in each scenario and how you would respond. Make sure you read the handouts on ethics and apply this knowledge to these scenarios. Do not just express an opinion. Please address both scenarios:
Case # 1 (1 page):
You work in an after-school program that serves at risk adolescents from low-income families. Several of the students are gay or lesbian and you have overheard your supervisor make anti-gay comments about these students. You are new on the job, and you are worried about confronting your supervisor for fear of being fired. Several of these students have come to you to complain about your supervisor. One student told you that your supervisor said that gay people should go to a rehabilitation center to be cured. Your supervisor is well connected in the community and has been working for the organization for 10 years. She considers herself religious and believes homosexuality is wrong. The students that you serve have multiple needs and have a history of being abused or neglected. What do you do?
Case # 2 (1 page):
A friend of yours has just started a private practice specializing in nutrition counseling. She has asked you to refer clients to her. You owe her a favor and feel pressured to send her some clients. Your friend has a fair amount of experience, but you don’t think she would be appropriate for the people you have in mind. Your friend has offered to give you a $100 gift card for every person you refer to her. You feel tempted and you are not sure what to do.
Question 4 (5 points)
[3-4 pages]
Case study: Juan is HIV-positive. He has been on HIV medications for the past two years. However, his physician reports that he is not taking all his meds and he does not take them on time. Juan is an active IV drug user. He is 45 years old. He is divorced. He has three children who live with their mother. He is currently unemployed and receiving monthly disability insurance and Medicaid. He lives in a room in an apartment belonging to a friend (who is also an IV drug user). He lives in an inner-city neighborhood where there is a lot of crime and drugs. He is constantly short of money and is unable to pay child support for his three girls who are under 18 years of age. They love their father but see very little of him. His ex-wife is very angry with him and wants nothing to do with him. She is HIV-negative. She works as a home health aide and is constantly struggling to make ends meet. Juan does not attend all his medical appointments and his physician is very worried about him. Juan seems to be depressed and his daily routine seems to be focused on getting high with his friend. He has lost 40 pounds in the past six months due to not taking his meds properly and he is not eating well. The physician has asked you to speak with Juan so that you can help him with his issues.
Using your knowledge of Motivational Interviewing (MI) (Week 8), describe how you would intervene with Juan. Include the following:
(a) Identify his stage of readiness to change;
(b) Describe the strategies you would use based on his stage of readiness to change (do not just list the strategies).
(c) Give an example of each strategy you will use with Juan.
Question 5 (8 points)
(6-8 pages)
Write a summary of four health counseling articles that are posted in the course. Each summary is worth 2 points. Here are the instructions:
• Click on the WEEK-BY-WEEK button on the left.
• You will see specific articles labeled “Health Counseling Article #” for each week.
• Select any four “Health Counseling Articles #” from Weeks 1-8 and read them.
• Once you have finished reading each article, you are to write a summary of the main points of each of these articles. I have posted a handout in the course under the assignment called “How to read and review a journal article.pdf”.
• Each summary must accurately capture the main points and concepts discussed in each article. This illustrates your ability to read, comprehend, and pull out the important information.
• Each summary is to be written in your own words. Do not attempt to copy or modify the summary/abstract provided by the authors of the article. I can’t tell if you have learned anything if you do that (not to mention that this is plagiarism). Also, do not use any quotes in your summary.
• Your summary of each article should be 1 and ½ pages – 2 pages long. Everything should be in one file only. Make sure you provide the info for each article (author, year, title, journal, issue, page numbers etc.) at the top of each summary. Each summary should capture the essential points of each article and conclude with a statement about what you learned from the article and how it will help you in your future career.
