AH1000/HT103: Law and Ethics
PORTFOLIO ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS
NB: Please make sure you use in-text citations when indicated. The only time these are not needed is when you discuss or state something considered âcommon knowledgeâ. This will be discussed at our first class meeting.
The essay must be typed using proper English grammar, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure. It must be typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font and double-spaced within and between paragraphs. Do not use any additional spacing.
PARAGRAPH 1: INTRODUCTION:
The following should be your introduction:
1. State your topic;
2. State 2 questions related to your topic/ethical dilemma that will not be answered in the introduction, but will be answered somewhere else in the paper;
3. State ethical dilemma in the form of a closed question;
4. State thesis/position statement, but not why you believe as you do (that will come in paragraph 5).
PARAGRAPHS 2 & 3:
These are the paragraphs in which you will discuss the sources found from your research and approved by your instructor. You should do the following in each one based on your specific source(s) for each paragraph:
1. Summarize what it is about;
2. These paragraphs are where you will answer the additional questions you posed in the introduction to the essay. Do not state the questions again, just the answers as part of your discussion of the content from your source(s).
3. The last sentence should connect this source to your dilemma â why did you choose this source as a basis for your paper?
4. Please limit use of quotes â if you use quotes, make sure it is just 1 or 2 sentences at most. You have to link the quote to something you have stated about the dilemma â why are you using this quote? What do you want the reader to get from this quote? You cannot end a paragraph with an in-text citation.
PARAGRAPH 4:
This paragraph is where you will discuss two opposing ways to view or resolve the ethical dilemma you are addressing. It should begin something like the following:
The two courses of action to resolve my dilemma are to, _________________________________ or _______________________________________.
You need to state an advantage and disadvantage for each course of action/point of view (sometimes, these are basically the opposite of each other, but not always). This must be worded based on the wording of your ethical dilemma.
PARAGRAPH 5:
You should start your paragraph with your thesis statement. This is the same sentence you ended the introduction with. This is the paragraph where you will establish the foundation for why you decided as you did, by including at least 2 laws/ethical theories, principles, codes of ethics, etc that we have discussed this semester, that you based your position on. You must have a definitive thesis statement.
PARAGRAPH 6:
In the concluding paragraph, discuss the significance of the information you researched to healthcare and to you as a healthcare professional or, if applicable, how it resonates with you personally.
SUBMISSION OF PORTFOLIO IN WEEK 12:
Once your essay is complete, you must submit it with an APA-formatted reference page as the last page of the essay, and the reflection letter.
The portfolio is worth 20% of your final grade, but failure to submit your portfolio project may result in failing the class. A ½ grade deduction will be made for portfolios submitted later than the deadline and will not be accepted after the semester ends.
