FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! ESSAY MUST BE FROM 350-400 WORDS!
Background: A lot of health messaging focuses on individual decisions/actions we can each take be
healthy. Over the past few weeks, we have talked about how infections spread from person-to-person,
our genes/family history, the environment, toxic chemicals, and the social determinants of health
have a huge impact on our health and change what it means to be healthy. (MUST INCLUDE THESE FACTORS IN THIS ESSAY!) Specifically, you will be writing (details below) a clear, focused, and well-informed essay that is
redefining health as MORE THAN eating well, sleeping, donât drink alcohol or smoke, etc!!!!!
With these facts in mind, your second essay focuses on the creation of a persuasive argument/essay
about what it means to be healthy â a definition that includes all of the topics we have discussed to
date. This essay emphasizes the importance of audience, evidence, and the components of effective
communication. Completion of this assignment will advance the course learning outcomes: (1)
describe what we mean by the word health (and the act of being healthy); (2) discuss how the social
determinants of health are connected to creating healthy communities; and (5) write and clearly
present key aspects of public health policy and practice that are needed to create healthy
communities
The Assignment: Being healthy does not just mean eating this, drinking that, exercising, and
getting enough sleep. That is part of the equation, but we can get sick through interactions with
others, our genes can make us sick or predestine us to become sick, our environment contributes to
our health, and then there are the social determinants of health.
Our definition/description and understanding of being healthy need to change radically.
An op-ed essay includes the strong, informed, and focused opinion of the writer on an issue
of relevance to a targeted audience.
Using our readings and discussions from the semester thus far, you are being asked to take a
position on the question: What does being healthy actually mean?
You should write your essay at a high-school reading level.
Details: You are to write an op-ed-style essay that is between 350-400 words. This is NOT a
research paper; your essay should be strongly opinioned, focused, and well-informed.
