Colorado and Washington were the first to legalize weed in 2012 and more states have added on since. The newest states to legalize recreational marijuana use were Maryland and Rhode Island in 2022.The recreational use of marijuana is legal in 21states as of 2023.The legalization of marijuana has various negative consequences, that include increases drug and alcohol use, increases crime, and lowers teens IQ. Violent crime is statistically higher in states where marijuana is legal. Health experts also advise against marijuana legalization. When teenagers have been reported to start using marijuana earlier it can reduce their IQ. There is more THC in weed today which can make it more addictive and more damaging to the brain. Also, marijuana is the biggest gateway drug meaning that if teens start using marijuana it makes it easier for them to try stronger more addictive drugs and increase alcohol use.
Legalizing recreational marijuana would boost the economy by creating new tax revenue and providing lots of new legal jobs to boost the economy. Most Americans are on the same page and agree that recreational use should be legal. Recreational use of marijuana have significantly helped millions of people reduce or eliminate their anxiety. If used correctly, there are a small amount of disadvantages. Personally, I do believe that marijuana should be legal but I think there should be restrictions. I believe that marijuana has great benefits for people with severe anxiety and when taken correctly. I think if people looked at smoking a joint, like having a glass of wine at the end of the night, I think more people would use this drug effectively and safely. But obviously it is certain that people will correctly use the drug, so that is what makes it so hard to regulate.

In Maryland marijuana has passed the law legalizing medical marijuana as of 2014 (Hart, 2022 p. 359) and has also been decriminalized (Ashton, 2023). In Maryland, marijuana is legal of a 30 day supply for patients in need of medical use (Hark, 2022 p.359). Having 10 grams or less is a civil offense (Ashton, 2023). As for Rhode Island, marijuana was legalized in 2006 for medical use (Hark, 2022, p. 359) and is fully legal. The possession of one kilogram has been decriminalize and individuals can apply for medical marijuana card (Ashton, 2023). The reasoning of the legalization is because of the safety and concern of the state. While in Rhode Island, users of marijuana can go over the boarder and have it legally, Rhode island government has decided that for them and their taxes it would be best to legalize it (governor, 2022).
As stated in the video, a major concern of short term effects of marijuana at ages less than 18 years could face short term memory with an addition of a decrease in concentration. Marijuana can alter an individuals mood with either positive or negative outcomes. Through long-term effects, marijuana has been associated with increased risk of psychotic disorder and since marijuana contains 4x more the amount of tar compared to tobacco smoking, its been shown that there will obviously be an increasing chance of lung issues. There are more health issues pertaining to the use of marijuana such as cardiovascular diseases and respiratory problems. If there’s a heavy and daily use of marijuana, amotivational syndrome can arise causing issues with mental and physical problems. Other causes can be associated with infertility in both men and woman and irregular menstrual cycle for women.
Some of the positive uses of marijuana are reduction in intraocular pressure, anti-asthmatic effect, a muscle relaxant, anti-seizure effect, antidepressant, analgesic effect, and appetite stimulant. These are all uses of how marijuana can be positive in its usage if used correctly and cautiously. There is an approximation of 10% of individuals who get addicted to marijuana as stated in the video. It is important to only use what is necessary and not over do it.
My personal position about legalize marijuana is mixed. I think that it is good there are positive uses for it, but is it really a necessity to have? While it has many negatives it also has a good amount of positives to level it with. Personally, I do not have a strong opinion on this matter and I do not want to lie and say I do with evidence that I do not have or support.
