Immigration legislation can be a contentious subject. The population of undocumented immigrants in the United States is approximately 11.2 million; there is a crisis at the borders due to the illegal immigrants surge, and many sustain life-threatening injuries, even death ( Kane et al., 2019). The rate of illegal immigrants can potentially overwhelm the healthcare resources in the United States. Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for health and social services as stated in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (Godfrey, 2010). However, immigrants are in the workforce and contribute to the economic growth of the US. They frequently work odd and high-risk jobs without health insurance (Harbut, 2019).
Although there has been increased public concern regarding the inadequacy of healthcare resources for undocumented immigrants, healthcare is considered a fundamental human right. I believe that individuals should not be discriminated against based on immigration status. So, given the constraints of healthcare resources, emergency care, primary care, and essential prescription drugs should be made available to undocumented immigrants (Cha et al., 2019).
The American Medical Association (AMA) policies and opinions support providing medical services to this vulnerable population (Harbut, 2019). For undocumented immigrants who do not qualify for the Deferred Action for Children Arrival (DACA), the AMA position statement opposes regulations or policies channel to punish medical professionals for providing medical care to the population, uphold policies for funding emergency care healthcare services to undocumented immigrants ( Harbut, 2019 ).
Similarly, professional nurses understand the nature of health, and in their unique roles, they stand to support the principles that result in the most significant benefits to society. Again, nursing has a long history of promoting justice in the health care system, advocating for social justice in distributing scarce resources and providing care to special individuals. The American Nurses Association held that healthcare should be provided to documented and undocumented immigrants as an issue of fundamental rights; also, the Patient and family advocacy role is deeply rooted in nursing professional ethics (Godfrey, 2010; Fowler, 2015, p. 131). Some of my colleagues’ providers are deployed and provide medical care services pending the legislative stance on the United States Southern borders. Further, healthcare resources such as vaccines should be equally available among illegal immigrants to prevent and eradicate contagious diseases for the immigrants and the host citizens.
