This research assignment asks you to deep dive into a CANADIAN
health inequity issue, barrier or gap and examine current policy/ies that are
trying to address it. Once you select your topic, you are asked to assess whether current policy/ies are addressing the issue as intended or whether there
are gaps that need to be examined and filled.
Pick a topic that you are passionate about. This assignment will be fun only if you are genuinely interested in the issue you are writing about.
1. Identify a health inequity issue (consider these questions: What is the problem? How is it an inequity issue? When did it start? What is its historical development? What social determinants of health do we need to consider when thinking about this health inequity issue?)
2. Describe the population that is affected by this problem (consider these
questions: Who is most affected by this health inequity? What are the
characteristics of this population group? What are some of the intersecting
identity factors of this group? Has this group experienced this inequity
historically (explain how and why)?
3. Research health or public policy/ies that were created to address the issue. Describe the policy/ies (When was it implemented? By whom?). Examine how the policy/ies meant to address the issue? In your opinion, discuss whether the policy/ies is working as intended or if there are gaps in implementation, assessment of its effectiveness, or outcomes.
4. Propose a policy amendment that would fill the gaps in the current policy.
This is the tough part of the assignment, here you need to propose a policy amendment that would potentially close the gaps in the current policy/ies. You need to carefully think through the issue, the population that is being affected by this issue, current policy/ies that are trying to address it & identify areas of improvement.
