As a nurse I work with a lot of individuals with respiratory failure or whom are on ventilators. To communicate we use many different communication sources if needed such as a communication board with a dry eraser, pictures of objects and facial expressions, and for language barriers offer a computer interpreter. This allows me to provide better quality of care and implement culturally services to my patients.

found many similarities focused on equality and quality of care between National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards and the expectations and standards in professional nursing practice. The CLAS standards focus on advancing equality in health care. By creating a plan to be inclusive to different cultures and beliefs. practices, languages, and communication needs. For example, providing language assistance to those with limited English proficiency. Focusing on culturally appropriate needs of the patients (HHS, n.d.). These are similar to the Code of Ethics in the Scope and Standards of Practice for nurses. Social justice is engrained in the Code of Ethics. Nurses are to advocate for the equality of our patients. Social justice builds on the equality and inclusivity of all cultures (ANA, 2021). Caring for the least among our community brings the community together to progress equality.
Our facility cares for a variety of cultures in our community. We are lucky enough to have video interpretation screens to better communicate with those who are less proficient in English. They are extremely helpful. Our local Latino population are a group who come into our facility fairly often. Although many of the children speak English fluently, the parents are more comfortable speaking in Spanish. The interpreters allow us to connect with these patients efficiently.
The other cultural group in our community is the Jewish community. We have a few Jewish nurses on our floor which help us to learn about their culture. I find it interesting to talk about the Jewish culture with both patients and staff. Equality and quality health care are part of our nursing culture.found many similarities focused on equality and quality of care between National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards and the expectations and standards in professional nursing practice. During my Nurse Residency we also had someone from the Language services who informed us of what all their services entail, a way to communicate directly with them, and how they are currently working on getting more interpreters to make more languages available. They also stated any Nurse who knows another language besides English can complete a test to become available to offer interpreting services if they choose to. This is all in the effort to avoid using family members to interpret.
I think an easy way of improving cultural competence is by learning as much as you can about different cultures/ customs. I see many patients are very open to talking about their culture when asked. It also shows patients that you see them and want them to have a more holistic care. Holistic care is a way of, ââ¦encouraging them to follow whatever practices are most beneficial to them,â or important for patients (Okere, 2022).
I do believe there is more education needed about different cultures and customs and how they impact patient care. I would join the unit leadership to begin with in an effort to educate staff by including education either during staff meetings or during the weekly email sent out to staff. By including a small segment with some facts, staff would become more culturally competent.During my Nurse Residency we also had someone from the Language services who informed us of what all their services entail, a way to communicate directly with them, and how they are currently working on getting more interpreters to make more languages available.
