PERSONAL DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PLANS & KIT ASSIGNMENT
ACTIVITIES AND FINAL PRESENTATION:
Develop a comprehensive plan that ensures you, your family members, your pets, and others can safely survive and function independently from any disaster for at least 72 hours. ➢ The presentation should be in a PowerPoint with each slide labeled to correspond with the criteria you are addressing from the grading rubric. PowerPoint template should be all white (NO DESIGN).
➢ The presentation should include:
o Title slide (includes name, local community of residence, workplace, and the number and ages of individuals and pets you are building your kit for).
o List and pictures of your kit’s supplies
o Information slide-Which disasters you and your family are at risk for (your home and work environments) and how they impact your preparedness plans
o Supply slide
o Slides including your detailed plan(s)
▪ 72-hour plan
▪ Rotation plan
o Description of work kit
o Description of vehicle kit
o List of future supplies that may be needed
o Reference slide (APA format)
➢ REVIEW THE GRADING RUBRIC (posted in Canvas) FOR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS AS YOU BUILD YOUR PRESENTATION.
The following tips (feedback from your instructor and former students) may provide some help with your kit.
1) Your geographic location is important. This gives the reader that is not familiar with the area/population/environmental threats/etc… an idea of location as well as the opportunity to research your area for information that might have been overlooked in the plan. Include the ages of individuals your kit is developed for. This allows peers to see that your kit will adequately provide for the number of individuals you state you have gathered supplies for.
2) Address and include disasters or emergencies specific to your area that place you/your population at risk. We learn from how others prepare. Make sure to cover all the bases so that you/your family or others are adequately prepared.
3) Kits: Home Plans/kits and work plans/kits should be prepared. These DO NOT NEED to be expensive!!! I encourage you to build them as you go.
4) Identify any supplies that would need to be added to your kits-future purchases as money allows, families grow, relocation to other areas, identification of new threats…. (i.e. generator, portable grill, crank radios, MRE’s, tarps, etc…) These should be addressed for each kit. Supplies within the kits must be identified as essential, nonessential or comfort.
5) Your plan must include an actual plan for the rotation of kit supplies. Example: a photo of a calendar that includes specific dates for rotation of specific supplies and/or screen images of your phone calendar that serves as specific documentation for the rotation of kit supplies. (Students also include assigned dates for review of items, etc…. (We know a kit should be reviewed and items rotated as they expire. Be specific.)
6) Detailed plans should be tailored to protect and meet the needs of your population (These plans should include communication and information sources specific to your area/population. When displaying personal documents, you can (blackout or white out) specific names/numbers/information to protect identity but there must be documentation of the communication plan. Example: Fire is a potential threat for everyone so everyone should include escape route/plan for you and your family, if a tornado is a threat include a tornado plan, etc…. There should be more than 1 plan in your presentation. There is not one plan that will fit everything we have to prepare for. Remember planning allows us to do our jobs and know that our family, friends, pets, loved ones are prepared and taken care of. Because we have planned ahead of time we can do our jobs even when there is chaos or devastation around us.
7) Take photos of your personal preparedness kits along the way and after you have assembled the kit. Your kit must contain identification that your kit was made by you in each photo. Include a piece of paper with your name, date, and course NU 343 on it somewhere in your supplies. The information must be easy to identify. Pictures must be reflective of the supplies you include. (If you state you need 3 cases of water and your photos have 3 bottles of water in your kit photos you will not be awarded credit).
8) Remember to personalize this presentation to your local environment. If you live in a coastal region, your presentation will be different from that of a peer that is more vulnerable to snowstorms. Many of you may live in an area that is at a greater risk for chemical or nuclear threats than others are. Some students will be at greater risk for tornadoes, flooding, wildfires, terrorism, etc… (i.e…Oklahoma vs. Alaska or Rhode Island). Whatever the risk are–your preparedness plans should address those risk. You will want to review your emergency management agency hazard mitigation plan for your work and home environment as there may be hazards (potentials for disasters that you are unaware of). This resource for the State of Alabama provides a wealth of knowledge. Feel free to use the link included and locate your county. (http://ema.alabama.gov/county.cfm)
9) REQUIRED–The title for posting your presentation to the discussion board forum “Personal Disaster Preparedness Plans and Kits”. The file name for your presentation should be: Students Name final project
10) REQUIRED–Make sure your presentation can be opened and viewed on the discussion board forum. No exceptions
all links must be accessible if you are hyperlinking. It generally works best to include the documents at the end of the
project or in the notes section for each slide.
11) Developing thorough plans and building quality kits can be a daunting task, however with planning weekly activities and a well-planned timeline you can accomplish this with little stress. As health care professionals, we must stay prepared and educated for what the next minute holds.
12) **NOTE–Make sure that all criteria are addressed. Reflection of content covered during the semester should be displayed in your plans and kit. This project is a reflection your knowledge and commitment to your personal and professional preparedness approach.
13) REQUIRED–Each slide must be labeled with the grading rubric detail criteria: such as “Title Slide”, “Be Informed Slide”, “Supplies Slide” on the slide that represents the data being presented. NO POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR SLIDES THAT ARE NOT CORRECTLY LABELED. (see example presentation)
