Describe how the collaborative peer review process impacted your learning and performance in the Capstone Project – White Paper.
The collaborative peer review process impacted both my learning and performance in the Capstone Project by allowing for insight and different perspectives on my writing style or chosen topic. It was a great way to engage with others in the course and learn about their projects as well.
Describe how you achieved each course competency and transferable skill, including at least one example of new knowledge gained related to that competency or transferable skill.
Integrate leadership and management principles with knowledge of healthcare policy, finance, and regulatory guidelines to enhance quality care and patient safety while functioning within legal and ethical parameters of professional nursing.
This was achieved through the assignment from module 02 for leadership and management on policies dealing with urinary catheters. The usage of a SWOT analysis tool is beneficial to dissecting and understanding components of in place policies or procedures that can be improved (Parker et al., 2017). This will become important as a nurse in the future for helping improve other policies within the healthcare setting so that patients receive the best of care possible.
Determine population-based strategies that incorporate health determinants to promote optimal health and prevent the escalation of diseases and conditions
This was achieved through the assignment from module 04 on health determinants affecting a veteran population and how to promote better strategies for their care. A lot of the veteran population suffers from mental health conditions and transportation issues (Myers et al., 2021). Coming up with options or strategies that could begin tackling these health determinants and all the subcomponents of these such as socioeconomic, social, and more was great insight into how to make an impact and promote optimal health for specific populations.
Utilize effective intraprofessional and interprofessional communication to promote a continuous and reliable therapeutic environment.
This was achieved through the assignment from module 05 dealing with writing a newsletter describing in detail intraprofessional and interprofessional communication. Identifying certain quotes that exemplify poor examples of the two so that nurses part of that organization can improve their skills (Manias et al., 2021). This will become important later as a nurse so that I can also identify when poor communication is used and to try and highlight when good communication in both intra and interprofessional styles is utilized to promote a better environment for patients and other colleagues.
Synthesize knowledge from the humanities, physical and social sciences, nursing theory, and applied research as a basis for evidence-based nursing practice and clinical reasoning.
This was achieved through the assignment from module 07. This I went over errors described in a scenario by a nurse and a debriefing with the Internal Review Board. The errors were systematically reviewed and compiled for understanding what led to a sentinel event in the scenario. Researching and understanding evidence based practices and nursing theory allowed for the critical dissection of all these components to understand how these errors impact patient outcome (Boeykens 2021). This will aid me as a nurse and improve my practices so that I am always considering evidence-based practice, nursing theory, the sciences, and clinical reasoning for best patient outcomes.
Analyze data from information systems and emerging healthcare technologies to guide decision making and clinical reasoning.
This was achieved through the assignment from module 10. There were several different patients to be prioritized for triage and assessment interview videos of each were our ways to identify cues by each patient to better place them in a prioritized list for the emergency department. Videos can be incredibly beneficial to seeing cues that may not be vocalized such as looking down, fidgeting, and demeanor. Videoing is an emerging type of healthcare technology tool that is beneficial to both providers and to healthcare staff such as nurses in determining the best course of action for the best patient outcomes. This goes along with understanding as well other outside sources or information in clinical decision making, such as potential risks that certain patients may have based on their diagnosis or assessments (Drach-Zahavy & Saban, 2016). Going forward these important skills will be very beneficial in my future nursing practices.
Synthesize components of practice excellence, clinical judgment, and personal knowing as a foundation for complex client care and lifelong learning
This was achieved through an assignment from module 09 that had us create a presentation looking at scenarios that dealt with clinical judgement, decision making, reasoning, practicing excellence, and our foundations in nursing practice. These were scenarios that impacted us as nursing students and how we utilized those skills to hypothesize, prioritize, and generate nursing actions that we took to promote best patient outcomes (Standing, 2020). This will come into play as a nurse going forward to always be understanding and looking to use critical thinking, clinical judgement and reasoning to determine our best courses of action for all scenarios.
