Obtain an issue of The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) from a remote period of history (at least 20-25 years old). The first issue of AJN was in 1905, so you can have some fun with this assignment selecting something that is of interest to you and exemplifies the role of the nurse during that time.
Obtain a current nursing journal (less than 5 years old), addressing the same issue described in the historical article, that is currently affecting the nursing profession. The remote and current journals need to discuss the same issue. You will see that issues in the early 20th century are often relevant issues in current healthcare settings. You will compare the two journals; the historical one and current one.
Summarize the articles and the chapter reading addressing the following subheadings:
What is the history of nursing? Examples to discuss: How/when did it start? What were big changes or advancements in the profession? When was it considered a profession? How did one become a nurse or who was considered nurse?
What was nursing like during your chosen time period and what issues were nurses facing?
How has the profession changed? How has the historical issue changed, varied, or why does it remain the same?
What are current issues in nursing? There are more than just one or two.
What is the most pressing issue nursing currently faces?
Why do you believe the issue you researched has remained relevant, and how can it be changed? How does it affect the culture of nursing?
This paper should be 3 – 4 pages in length (excluding the title and reference page) and written in APA format style. Review and follow the rubric for grading criteria. For full points you must have 4 full pages of content. See rubric for this specific requirement as 3-4 pages is still acceptable if you covered all of the components of the rubric.

. As you review your nursing articles consider where the profession was during your chosen period of history, here nursing is today, and how nursing has evolved. Also, consider who was responsible for the profession moving forward, and where the profession would be today if no one had assumed leadership. As you already know nursing is so much more than caring for the ill. Consider the many roles of nursing and what contributions do you want to make to the profession.
