Step 6: Run your searches in your selected databases.
How many results did you get? □ Too few □ Too many □ Just right
If too few, try removing one concept (one entire column of terms OR’d together) and rerun.
If too many, try adding another more specific concept to the strategy, or try using a filter/limit.
Just right? Scan your results. Are they relevant? Current? Are there research and peer-reviewed articles in the results? Are there terms used in the results that should be used to refine your search?
Troubleshooting Advice
Results not relevant: Check the terms used in the search. Is there a concept that is ambiguous and is causing problems? Are there more specific ways to phrase the concept? Did you use quotation marks around phrases in your search? If not, add those and rerun search.
Results not current: Check terms used in the search. Do they accurately represent your topic? Check a book or website to make sure the terms are in fact used for this concept. Then rerun search. If results still not current, it is possible there is no newer research available. Seek assistance from a librarian or instructor.
Results too aligned with medicine and not enough with nursing: Try searching CINAHL if you’ve not already done so.
Step 7: Read articles, extract pertinent information, paraphrase/summarize results from each, and synthesize the body of evidence you have found.
