Yes, as defined by Peplau, this role is relevant to nursing practices, more so in this era that we are in. A surrogate is a person who legally agrees to carry the pregnancy and give birth on behalf of another woman. The surrogates are normally paid to carry the pregnancy, take care of it and give birth. The surrogate role is relevant because it ensures that the right steps towards the surrogation process are taken since there are a lot of medical steps that need to be taken for the surrogation to be as effective as possible.
The nurse helps the woman ready to let her pregnancy be carried by another woman understand the whole process better by, for example, letting the woman know the right woman to carry her pregnancy. It is through the nurse that the woman is ready to give out her pregnancy so that another woman can carry it and gets to know well the differences and similarities in another woman’s behaviors and emotions. The nurse acts as an advocate because she is the one who connects the two women and completes the medical steps for the surrogacy that are supposed to be taken.
As stated in the surrogate role, nurses greatly ensure that the surrogation process is healthy and effective (Vaismoradi, 2022). For example, ensuring that the people who want to have a surrogation have enough exploration since this operation always has much anxiety. When a person has anxiety about something, the best way to end that anxiety is by educating them about what makes them have that anxiety. It is through educating them that they get to know more about it and end the anxiety since it is often due to a lack of information.
The surrogate role also rules out that a nurse should ensure that the people involved in that surrogacy have a conducive environment to express their concerns regarding the surrogacy safely. Surrogacy is a serious matter; thus, everybody has to be allowed to express themselves by getting involved in it so that any alarming concern can be looked into and responded to appropriately.
