Description
An opinion-editorial (op-ed) is another way to engage in advocacy and present your opinion on a topic thoughtfully and persuasively. These articles are some of the most-read pieces by the general public and health policy decision-makers. This assignment will provide another opportunity to learn a practical advocacy tool that you can use during and after your program.
Rationale for Assignment and Relationship to Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
As future DNP and PhD leaders, you will need to be knowledgeable about the relationship of legislation to advancing nursing policy issues. In addition, you will need to be able to articulate your role in the healthcare system clearly and quickly. This assignment is designed to give you the tools to practice this form of advocacy for future use.
Instructions for Op-Ed
You will write a 500- to 750-word Op-Ed about one of the following topics:
1) The proposed legislation topic of your healthcare policy memo
2) The role of doctorally prepared nurses (DNP ) in advancing health in the United States:
DNP- Increasing scope of practice for advanced practice nurses, CRNAs; expanding role of nurse executives/leaders
OR
PhD- Funding for your research area
3) A healthcare policy topic of your choosing (If you choose this option, you’ll want to select something on which you can take a stance and call readers to action.)

Components and Considerations
Writing Style: Write your op-ed clearly and succinctly. Please use APA 7th ed. student formatting. Include an audience section and heading before the op-ed begins, in which you describe your target audience, but do not use headings or subheadings within the op-ed itself. Use your current credentials, including University of Arizona Doctoral Student.
Audience Section: In this section, include two or three sentences that tell us what newspaper, website, or blog you would submit your op-ed to, who their audience is, and why your chosen topic could be of interest to that audience.
Op-Ed First Paragraph: Within the first three sentences of this paragraph, include a hook to get your audience interested, provide background on your topic, and state your opinion clearly stated.
Op-Ed Second+ Paragraphs (Expansion With Supporting Evidence): In the paragraphs between the first and last (conclusion), expand upon the topic and your opinion. Please substantiate your opinion with relevant evidence that is logically linked to your opinion. In other words, although an op-ed is less formal in tone than an academic article, it should still be evidence-based.
• Credentials and Credibility: To demonstrate your credibility in the expansion section, include your credentials and citations. Describe who you are, your training, and why the reader should believe you have the credibility to put forth your opinion on the topic. In addition, cite relevant research to support this opinion.
Conclusion: Finally, end your op-ed with a strong concluding paragraph that restates your opinion and encourages readers to take a specific action or otherwise support your position. Use action verbs.
