NGC526 Quantitative & Qualitative Literature Matrix Assignments
Each matrix assignment is worth a total possible 10 points toward your final grade (see rubric in UBlearns)
The purpose of a literature matrix is to provide a quick reference to a body of literature relevant to a research project. The content becomes the framework upon which you create a fully synthesized literature review for your intended project (e.g., DNP project, PhD dissertation, grant proposal). There is no standardized practice, but certain elements are recommended, and they are required for this assignment as indicated below.
There will be a total of three assigned articles included in each of your completed matrix assignments.
Step 1: Create a table template using your choice of software. The most commonly used approaches are Microsoft Word and Excel. You may need to make a few drafts of different approaches to see which one you prefer. The goal is to maximize the use of space.
Step 2: Create columns of categories and rows for each of the articles. You must include those columns provided on the sample template in these instructions (see page 2). Remember to alphabetize your entries in your matrix so that they match the order of the references at the end (why? A good habit to start because it’s easier to locate articles in cases where you have dozens of entries in the matrix).
Step 3: Extract data from each article as indicated by the column heading. Briefly summarize that element of the article in your own words. You may use the author’s own words but be sure to place them in quotation marks and provide the page number so that you (and I) will know that those are direct quotes. Be consistent in your extraction across the studies. Look at the author’s manner of organizing the information. Use the study abstract to guide you as you pull out the main points, but remember that the abstract does not provide all the necessary details (particularly in relation to the method and sample characteristics). Do not get lost in details but provide enough information to be able to get a good sense of the article without having to go back to the primary source to read it again. When saving your document, please include your last name in the title (e.g., Agbemenu_NGC526 Quant Matrix).

Book (optional): Health Sciences Literature Review Made Easy (Garrard). The book is a resource for conducting a literature review on a specific question but has good information on how to create a matrix. • Why is study needed?
Purpose:
• Aim or goal of study • Design: quantitative or qualitative; cross-sectional or longitudinal; randomized control trial; focus groups; face-to-face interviews; etc.
• Recruitment: describe how (e.g., online, flyers)
• Eligibility Criteria: What characteristics were required for participation?
• Group assignment: when relevant, how were participants assigned to groups or study conditions? How many in each group? • N = xx
• Race: X% White, X% Black (or n = xx White, n = xx Black)
• Gender: X% Female (or n = xx Female)
• Average age: xx years
• Setting: Midwest skilled nursing facility
“N” or “n”  uppercase italicized N denotes total sample size; lowercase italicized n denotes subsample size • Include a succinct summary of the results as they relate to the purpose of the study.
• These are typically provided by author(s) in Results section and in the abstract.
• The author may also provide some conclusions based on the results. Strengths:
• Provide at least one strength of study.
• xxx
Limitations:
• may be noted by author in discussion section
• or those study weaknesses you identify
• xxx • these may be mentioned by author in discussion section
• or you may identify future research based on conclusions drawn from study • How is this useful in a clinical setting?

In-table Formatting Hints:
-Use 10-pt font in table cells to save room. Use headings as indicated and insert bullets with phrases.
-Do not use full sentences. Be concise! Use landscape layout orientation.
-You may also make it viewable in Web Layout (see option in lower right corner of Word).
-Make sure table fits on page and all text is visible.
-Arrange the entries in alphabetical order by last name of first author so that they appear in the same order as they are presented in the References page (see next page for instructions).

Reference Page Reminders:
• Begin a new page following the table and label it References (bold and centered at top as was done above).
• An alphabetized list (by last name of first author) of full citations for each article in the table must be included on this page.
• Remember to follow APA 7th style requirements precisely. Points will be deducted for style errors. Refer to page 317 of the APA 7th edition style manual or for quick reference, see the Purdue OWL website: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
o Remember that the doi number must be formatted as an active hyperlink (test the link to be sure it functions properly).
o Pay careful attention to placement of periods and commas, as well as use of italics. Remember also to use lower and upper-case letters properly in title of article.
• References page should be double-spaced in its entirety.
Before submitting your assignment:
• Triple check APA style in References page.
• Be sure that you include something in all cells of the table.
• Save your file with your last name first, followed by assignment (e.g., Hequembourg_NGC526 Quant Matrix).
